(SWIPE! ) Texas, United States | June 19th, 1865 - it was on this date that the Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas with the news that the civil war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Let's keep in mind that this was TWO YEARS AFTER President Abraham Lincoln's #EmancipationProclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863.
Many of us find it obvious that the news was deliberately withheld by enslavers so as to maintain the labor force on plantations - while there have been numerous attempts to explain this TWO AND A HALF YEAR DELAY ; i.e., stories of messengers being murdered on their way to Texas with the news of freedom.
Juneteenth is one of the oldest known celebrations commemorating the ending of slavery in the US. Some may ask "how can we find happiness or rejoice during the time in this country where we still are not considered to be FREE?" So many of our brothers and sisters are losing their lives to the modern day slave catchers - aka police officers. #TrayvonMartin, #RekiaBoyd, #FreddieGray, #PhilandoCastile, #SandraBland, #AltonSterling, & #TamirRice just to name a few. As Black people, we have always seen the light - but along with seeing that light, we must maintain our strength, maintain our focus and we must #UNIFY. We are the Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren or Great Great Grandchildren etc of the slaves that they could not kill - so it is in our DNA to be strong and fight for our freedom.
It's levels to this shit Family. Today, while you celebrate our ancestor's official freedom from slavery - let's discuss black businesses, let's discuss black politics, let's discuss circulating the #BLACKDOLLAR, keeping together the #BLACKFAMILY and the importance of #BLACKPOWER in order to cultivate #BLACKEXCELLENCE. #WeAllWeGot! #HappyJuneteenth Peace & Love
