“Salmon don’t bite once they’re in the river”
The common narrative heard on 90% of social media posts, blogs, fly shop talk, etc. While accurate that salmon aren’t eating for nutritional value once they begin their spawning run, turning off natural instinct is impossible!
These fish will take a fly, and absolutely crush swung streamers and intruders! This big King absolutely destroyed this intruder today!
I honestly tied this on almost as a long shot, but the color combo was making sense with what we were seeing fish react too all morning. A few deep swings later and this guy took off up and down the run!
The fishing pressure has been on and these fish are getting line shy, but getting them to take a fly is possible, you just need to put in the work. Moral of the story, don’t go salmon fishing with the mentality of “these fish won’t bite so we gotta snag them to catch them.” Educate yourself, challenge yourself, and have fun because that’s what Fly Fishing is really all about!
