At the end of a very long, hard weekend-long personal development seminar a few years ago, the leader of the event stood up and said she was about to reveal what all three, 12+ hour long days lead up to.
I sat on the edge of my seat. The training wasn't a pleasant experience for me and I was VERY HAPPY that I was in the final hours of it.
I was hoping whatever great secret she was about to unveil for us would make the weekend worth what, at the time, felt like a giant waste of 3 days of my life.
She picked up a piece of chalk, turned her back to us, and wrote something on the blackboard in the front of the room. Then she stepped back to reveal the message:
LIFE IS EMPTY AND MEANINGLESS.
Seriously. That's what she wrote -- and "You have GOT to be kidding me," is what I thought. Honestly, I was pissed. All these stupid exercises, all this work, all this dealing with people I didn't want to deal with all weekend, and that was all I got.
Life is empty and meaningless. "This stupid seminar sure is empty and meaningless," I grumbled.
The instructor turned back to the board and kept writing. I slouched back in my seat, arms folded and with an expression so skeptical my eyebrows threatened to disappear into my hair.
The message grew:
LIFE IS EMPTY AND MEANINGLESS, AND IT'S EMPTY AND MEANINGLESS THAT IT'S EMPTY AND MEANINGLESS.
It took all my effort not to throw up my hands and walk out. I couldn't believe THIS was the big secret, the big ah-ha we were supposed to get out of all this.
I didn't get it then... but you know what?
I get it now.
And I've also realized there's a less depressing, less triggering way to communicate the same message that "empty and meaningless" tells us.
