‘Shadow of the Colossus’ could have been a very enjoyable game – but unfortunately it is greatly let down by one thing.
Originally a PS2 game, I had never heard of this before and have only had my first PS console for around a year. The game is usually described as a “masterpiece” and the “game of the year” rated highly by critics and users alike.
A remastered version came out earlier this year, and, since it was on sale I thought I’d check it out.
This is a puzzle game where you play as a man called Wander who needs to defeat several Colossi to bring a girl back to life. Each Colossi has weak points which you must figure out how to reach in order to bring them down.
The remaster is visually breathtaking. The amount of detail manages to bring a mysterious, barren land to life. The movement on the fur of each colossi is also very realistic.
The soundtrack is superb, especially the music that starts playing once you manage to get on to a Colossi – it gets you pumped. The puzzles i.e. trying to figure out how to climb them are fun.
BUT none of this matters when the controls are as dreadful as they are. Personally, I found it very hard to enjoy the game because of how horrible they are. You can get used to them but I gave up after the sixth Colossi (the first one I found scary, by the way). I can’t say for sure but I think that even if I had finished the game I probably wouldn’t rate it as highly the majority. Very enjoyable, yes, but probably not one of the best games ever.
So if you haven’t yet played the game but you are interested, it may be worth bearing the clunky controls in mind, before you purchase, and if you have, what did you find? Did the controls bother you or was it not a problem at all?
