6 DAYS until the opening of the Tallinn chapter of BT13: GIVE UP THE GHOST 🔜

Meet the artist: Carlotta Bailly-Borg •
“In many of Bailly-Borg’s works, seemingly grotesque figures dance to the rhythm of their orientation in sensual movements by stretching, touching, loving, grabbing, and wanting. Coming from medieval drawings, old Peruvian ceramics or Greek mythology, these ambiguous characters recur in various media used by the artist.” writes Carolina Ongaro in the #catalogue ///
Carlotta Bailly-Borg was born in 1984 in France. They live in Brussels, Belgium. They graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy in 2010 and were an artist-in-residence at Le Pavillon, Palais de Tokyo in 2013. They have presented their work at Studio Amaro, Napoli; Attic, Brussels; CNEAI, Paris; Karma International, Los Angeles; Espace II at Galerie Nathalie Obadia, Paris; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; and Galerie Abilene, Brussels. 📸 Carlotta Bailly-Borg, Out of tune

Meet the artist: Lina Lapelytė• •
“Lapelytė’s performance-based works often engage trained and untrained performers in an act of ‘singing’ through a wide range of genres such as mainstream music and opera, while examining issues of displacement, otherness, ageing and gender,” writes Sofia Lemos in the #catalogue
Lina Lapelytė was born in 1984 in Lithuania. Lapelytė’s performance-based practice is rooted in music and flirts with pop culture, gender stereotypes, aging and nostalgia. Their works ‘Ladies’ (2015), ‘Hunky Bluff’ (2014) and ‘Candy Shop’ (2013/2015) were shown in different contexts and locations including the Serpentine Pavilion in London; the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London; the Venice Architecture Biennale; and MACBA, Barcelona. ///

“The eventful and prolific output of Ülo Sooster was only halted by the artist’s premature passing in 1970 at the age of 46. Mirroring the political upheavals of the second half of the 20th century in the Baltic States and the wider Soviet Union, Sooster stands out as a figure characterised by defiance and insistence on their artistic enquiry throughout the Soviet political turbulences,” writes Rado Istok in the #catalogue ///
Ülo Sooster was born in 1924 in Ühtri, Estonia, and died in 1970 in Moscow. Meet the artist: Klara Lidén
• “The enduring joke here is time. As Simon Critchley states, ‘In being told a joke, we undergo a particular experience of duration through repetition and digression, of time literally being stretched out like an elastic band. We know that the elastic will snap, we just don’t know when, and we find that anticipation rather pleasurable.’ Laugh often: each of the works by Lidén repeat, stretching out their instants into moments folded back on themselves. With each loop, it keeps going, elastic snapping like the string of an instrument.” writes Erik Martinson in the #catalogue ///

A series of monotypes by Sanya Kantorovsky are now on view through August 12th at the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) in Vilnius, Lithuania for the Baltic Triennial, “GIVE UP THE GHOST.”

Spread over multiple locations in Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia, “the three exhibitions that form the core of the Triennial are all different in format, content and context. However, each of the chapters is informed by a shared concern: what does it mean to belong at a time of fractured identities? BT13 – GIVE UP THE GHOST will unfold through and with this very question, careful not to offer a single or illustrative response. Instead, it opts for a collective vision of what is at stake: independence and dependency—and everything that lies in between—to territories, cultures, classes, histories, bodies and forms.” – @baltictriennial13

Meet the artist: Hannah Black

“In their work My Bodies (2014) Black attempts to re-assess our relationships to our bodies and their conceptions as self-contained entities through images and sounds that create both comfort and discomfort. The gap of meaning that lies between the musical performances of ‘my body’ – sometimes celebratory, sometimes moody – and the portraits of CEOs, enables a projection onto and inside these bodies, and finally prompts the question: If you were offered the chance to be reborn, would you do so in another body?” Text by Cédric Fauq @cedric.fauq from the #catalogue ///

Meet the artist: Derek Jarman• • “Made at the height of the AIDS crisis and the struggle for queer liberation, and following Jarman’s own diagnosis and coming-out as HIV-positive in 1986, these works nevertheless speak of vitality and life. They are a refusal to give up, to shut up, to just lie down cowering and die. They are an exorcism of anger and emotion.” Text by Anya Harrison from the #catalogue
///
Derek Jarman was born in Northwood, Middlesex, in 1942 and died in London in 1994. They were educated at the University of London and at the Slade School of Art. Their first work in cinema was as a set designer on Ken Russell’s The Devils (1971) and Savage Messiah (1972). Jarman’s first feature film was the low budget Sebastiane (co-d. Paul Humfress, 1976), a story about the martyrdom of St. Sebastian, which created a stir in the art cinema market because of its overt depiction of homosexual desire.

Speaking of #Immature had to post this... .

#BizzyBone @mrmccane @marqueshouston @coolasskelton @cityofrome #GiveUpTheGhost.
And rule ten, better not use thy name in vain
And the children are our future, till they shoot us, maintain
Rule two, thou shall not steal
But I did and I will especially for my babies
None of em pay my bills
And in my wheelchair I get too old for those reel
Who done gave me free meals, and they don't see me make a mill
And until that day we'll keep rollin. Fillin it up with Brandy
From the East to the West to the planet
Betta pay attention to the Ten Commandments... .

But MH's verse was so dope... .

Everybody that's confused just hear me out (hear me out)
From coast to coast from coast to coast
Give up the ghost (give up the ghost)
All our homies really don't know just what to do (just what to do)
Cause there's a coffin over there waiting for you (waiting for you)
Downloading all the info from your mind, your mind. (Yeah !)
Downloading all the info from your mind (your mind, mind)
(Come on, That's right, Immature, Bizzy Bone)
When your soul is gone, what will we find
Peace to the end of the road that's where are... .

My latest piece is currently untitled, but here it is. In the second photo you can see it as a WIP. Created while listening to “Give Up the Ghost” by @radiohead , on repeat. Yes, sometimes I work this way. The song defines my mood while in the creative process and my emotions were big the day I started this one. There was a lot going on for me to digest. Created using all @wildthorne watercolors. Truth be told, I have no other paints. I truly wish I could capture the shimmer of the metallic watercolors I use because it really gives the piece a whole different perspective. These paints are stunning to work with. ✨ #wildthornewatercolors #wildthorne #giveuptheghost

Meet the artist: Ola Vasiljeva
• “Dream logic is all that should be relied on when engaging with the work of Ola Vasiljeva, though the impetus is to find narratives in their installations. It is tempting to try to decipher the clues that have been left for us – to believe that a drama has been staged and the key to its emotional climax, to the beginning and the end, is to be found among characters and their props. Instead, Vasiljeva urges the viewer to forget the narrative impulse, unlearn this desire for resolution, for character development, for drama and to delve into the realm of the unconscious,” writes Ana Iwataki in the #catalogue ••••

Meet the artist: ACHRAF TOULOUB • “My work for the Baltic Triennial 13 is centred around the idea that approaching reality will no longer emanate from our minds, but will perhaps be born more through deep and thin moments of loss, something between reflex and intuition, where our common memory can appear in an instant. So I develop pictorial representations around this intuition of ‘a still being’ in a time of confusing simplifications”, says Achraf Touloub. •

Achraf Touloub’s paintings, drawings, sculptures and video works are based on the intuition that the conventional binary opposition between tradition and the modern mind is, in fact, a movement of convergence. They research the complicity between the technological society and the symbolic power of tradition; both redefining the invisible areas of our time. Touloub were born in Casablanca, and they live and work in Paris. Their work have been part of several exhibitions at the 57th Venice Biennale; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and KochiMuziris Biennale. •

If you don’t have the album, please head over to @itunes and get your ROCK on or if your really badass... go to DWTD records and get your wax on... #rocknroll #poprock #punkrock #originalmusic #giveuptheghost #singersongwriter #supportlocalmusic #supportlocalartist #supportoriginalartist #passion #album #vocalist #guitarist

Into your arms
What seems impossible
Don't hurt me, don't haunt me
Into your arms
Don't hurt me
Into your arms
Don't haunt me
Into your arms
I think I have had my fill
Don't hurt me, don't haunt me
Into your arms
Don't hurt me
Into your arms
Don't haunt me
Into your arms
Don't hurt me
Into your arms
Don't haunt me
I think I should give up the ghost
Don't hurt me, don't haunt me
Into your arms
Don't hurt me, don't haunt me

We are happy to announce that the catalogue of #baltictriennial13 is now also available via CURA. @curamagazine
As the BT13’s artistic director Vincent Honoré said, “the publication is intended less as an encyclopedic introduction to the project and practice of each artist, and more as an invitation to view individual practices and works from distinct positions, opening up a series of portals through which to access each artist’s contribution.”

Today I’m introducing an original character to my series 3. This is Thomas Reeves from my comic Give Up the Ghost, with writer CW Cooke. We released a short preview of this last year, and now we’re both working to get back to this weird western story.
