MEMORIES RECOVERED DURING A HOUSE CLEAR-UP - PART 36
MICHAEL STIPE of R.E.M. - November 1988
In late 1988 I photographed MICHAEL STIPE in a meeting room at Warner Bros Records in Kensington High St, London. An entirely uninspiring location for exciting images, or to energise the portrait subject.
The fairly brief photo session took place at what was, for him, the end of a very long day, he having - for hours - fielded scores of repetitive interview questions from a series of Journalists, that were primarily related to his band, REM, and their imminent new album release, 'GREEN'. I desperately attempted to make the very dull, bland, pale and anonymous 'brown' room somehow more 'magical' by experimenting with moving camera, slow shutter speeds and off-camera flashgun in the fast fading Autumn room and strip light. The window behind him was, I vaguely recall, fake.
The 'vanishing' effect on Michael's hair now seems mildly prophetic, given that he shaved it all off a couple of years later and became an even better-known popstar as a baldy. Like me! Like me 'shaven headed', not like me 'a popstar', obviously!
