Regrann from @musicflashbacks - June 20, 1992 - "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow" by Nice & Smooth went to No.1 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. Written and produced by the group, it is taken from their second album, Ain't A Damn Thing Changed. This was Nice & Smooth's biggest radio hit, accompanied by a video got heavy rotation at MTV, directed By Eric Meza. The song was set to the guitar loop from "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman.
Nice & Smooth is one of my favorite Hip Hop groups and I had a blast working on their projects. Greg Nice is still one of my all-time favorite rappers. His rhymes are so random and fun, and you'd be like, "what did he say?" But his flow is so sick and his voice gets you amped. For me, he is like the Ricky Henderson of rap. One of my top choices for the leadoff spot on a posse cut. See Dwyck! GREG N-I-C-E!
Ordinarily, I might have chosen a clip for this post that featured Greg's rhyme (which I love), but Smooth B's rhyme on this song is so epic, the story so deep and his performance in the video is so dramatic that you gotta give the brother his due.
Making this post reminds me of the time we were in Los Angeles and the president of Def Jam charged me with making sure that Greg got to a taping the next day at Soul Train. Greg had done a feature for Lisette Melendez on "Goody Goody" and they were scheduled to perform it on the show. It was my own little "Get Him To The Greek" night. The details are fuzzy now but I recall a lot of weed, a lot of driving, I know we were at Fatburger at some point during the night. We did get to the Soul Train set on the Paramount lot on time, even if I was about fall asleep standing up. I do remember right after we got there, collapsing in one of the chairs in the dressing room and thinking, "Mission Accomplished". Greg walks in the room and he goes, "I need some socks." He pulled up his pant legs like a little kid and all I saw was ashy ankles. I was like, "Damn bro. What happened to your socks??" So it was one more thing, and then it was Mission Accomplished. Good times!
