My great uncle Wayne lost his eyesight when he was a young boy. I made this sign for him for his 80th birthday. The Braille word is "family." Did you know you can find Braille cards at Hallmark and on Etsy?

Desert problems. 😂😂😂 Not really a problem at all considering where we moved from has STILL been getting snow. I ain't about that life. 😂😂😂 This funny letterboard brought to you by my funny, witty, and sarcastic baby girl. ❤️

17

What would be on your wood? #tbt to the time I shipped this sign to a woman, her husband in public service, and their fur babies. Creating signs which represent and celebrate YOUR life is my passion! Love it! Mother's Day is just around the corner and I'd love to help you give her something she'll love and treasure. ❤️ Send a DM or visit link in profile.

52

This sweet customer asked if I could personalize the sign instead of doing his, hers, and paw prints. I'm happy to offer personalization, any color combination, any size, and any number of hooks. Let's work together to create a sign to fit your home, family, and lifestyle! Send me a DM or visit my shop > link in bio.

Give me all the signs. If you've been wanting a letterboard, rumor on the street is some @target stores have them marked down to 50% off. I got this one for my birthday and love it! Here's this week's (or month's, if things get crazy) message. 😂#relatable What would yours say? If you have one, how often do you change the message?

26

Awesome way to start my day! So grateful for my customers. ❤️ It would have been easier for this customer to leave a 5 star review and no comments. It would have been easiest for this customer to not leave a review at all. But this customer went above and beyond and totally made my day!!! Thank you, sweet customer!

19

Packaging up lots of happy mail today. I loved making these signs and I'm excited to get them to their homes! ❤️📬 Happy Friday! What are you up to today?

23

Happy Easter! Spent yesterday exploring Valley of Fire and it is so beautiful there. Can't wait to go back, get my hike on, and explore more! ⛰️🏜️☀️

It's day 31 of #marchmeetthemaker and I'm feeling pretty accomplished (read: badass) for not even missing a day! 🤘🤣 Check out previous posts for days 1-30 if you missed them. Thank you @joannehawker for the daily prompts which helped me share more about who I am, what I do, and why I do it.
.
Day 31 prompt: creative friends. My mom tops my list...she's creative, resourceful, and gets things done! #igetitfrommymomma ❤️ She asked me to make a sign for her about 4 years ago which is how my sign business was born. #thanksmom

This Instagram community has connected me to so many creative friends who inspire me, support me, encourage me, and help me grow as a maker. Tap the photo to see a few of my favorite crazy talented creative friends. Thank you for being part of my tribe!

It's day 30 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-29 If you missed them.
Day 30 prompt: top tip/advice. Be a voice, not an echo. In other words, be who YOU are, don't copy others, work on yourself/self-confidence/self-esteem, know your own worth, focus on what you are doing, don't worry about what others are doing, and avoid the comparison game. Work on yourself and the rest will work itself out. ❤️

1

It's day 29 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-28 If you missed them.
Day 29 prompt: community. The community of makers I've found here on Instagram is amazing! It's all about community over competition. ❤️ Thank you for supporting me, cheering me on, and being part of my tribe. Click on the photo of my maker wall of fame for a few of my maker community peeps.

3

Shipped this new design today. I think using a hook for a lint roller (aka dog hair roller) is genius! 😂 This and other dog lover signs can be found in my shop, link in profile. ❤️🐕

It's day 27 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-26 If you missed them.
Day 27 prompt: recommend a maker. I love so many makers and the community of makers on Instagram is amazing! Today, I am giving a BIG shout out to one of my favorite makers, encouragers, and small business supporters...Soury @kawaiigoodies1! She's one of the sweetest, kindest, most encouraging women I've met on Instagram. I use Soury's awesome masking tape on every package I ship and the custom rubber stamp I ordered from her on the back of every sign I make. And if you're lucky, your order will include some of her mouth-watering homemade caramels. She's also rocking the keto life and shares her journey and recipes if you're into it. Go check her out and give her some love! ❤️

5

So when I'm not having fun making signs, I'm not having fun updating this house. 😂 #seewhatididthere Because I love before and after photos, I'm sharing them with you. #sharingiscaring Finish line is in sight! I've painted the walls and refinished the cabinets...gutted the pantry, added shiplap to the walls, and added stained shelves to fit our spices, containers, and small appliances...replaced the baseboards..installed new window treatments, sink, faucet, garbage disposal, and hardware...purchased new appliances and an island...had new flooring installed (I watched the guy install it so I can replace the bathroom flooring myself now). Last few things to do: backsplash, make a big sign to go above the window, build a pull-out cabinet for trash and recycling bins, and style the space above the cabinets. And if you dare ask me which photo is the before or after, I will throat punch you. 😂😂😂 #leastfavoriteprojectever #imeanEVER #hgtvdontcallmeillcallyou

14

It's day 25 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-24 If you missed them.
Day 25 prompt: being a maker means.... freedom. Freedom to work from home so I can be here for my shorties. It means loving what I do, surrounded by the ones I love. It means working my ass off, succeeding, failing, and figuring it out as I go. It means being the best boss I've ever had and being employee of the month every month, with a reserved parking spot. 😂 It means putting my heart in to the things I make with my own two hands and being brave enough to share it with the world. It means my kitchen table and countertops are often covered in signs and cleared just before dinnertime. It means using my mind and my hands in creative and resourceful ways. Being a maker means I'm following my big dreams and setting an example for my shorties. ❤️ Follow your own big dreams, sweet babes!

3

It's #stateoftheshopsaturday and I'll play along. My shop is trashed. I literally just took the last of the kitchen cabinets in the house a few minutes ago. Excited to be done with the long ass process of sanding, deglossing, priming, priming, painting, sanding, painting, sanding, painting, curing...aka least fave project EVER. Annnnyywaaaay, on to the next project. Right after I handle clean up on aisle 4. Aisle 4 = my shop. Happy Saturday!

😂😂😂 This review ROCKS! Legit made me laugh! 🤣🤣🤣

4

It's day 23 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-22 If you missed them.
Day 23 prompt: hands at work. I posted a video a couple days ago of me painting backwards and a few of you tripped out that I really do legit paint backwards, right to left. So for today's trick, I thought I'd show you how I can write upside down AND backwards, in cursive, at the same time...watch the video. First, I write upside down and backwards, then I flip the paper around and write the same word the regular way. #hiddentalent 😂

8

A piece of wood + a dowel + 5 minutes = problem: solved.

3

It's day 22 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-21 If you missed them.
Day 22 prompt: sketchbooks + lists. Now THIS prompt is my jam! I'm a die hard list-maker and pen or pencil to paper is my thing. ✏️📒 (have you noticed all the pen and pencil emojis are for right-handed people? #leftiesleftout) Lists keep me on point. And there there are the sketches, mock-ups, and ideas....my ideas are never-ending and I have a TON of ideas sketched in notebooks.

4

In case you missed it in stories, here's a video of how I paint. Backwards. I'm a lefty so it's a necessity. 🖌️ And in case you're snowed in and wondering where spring is, it's here, in Nevada...I shot this video in my backyard. ☀️ 72 degrees, baby! 😎 Hope the spring weather makes its way to you freezing peeps soon! ❤️

18

It's day 19 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-18 If you missed them.
Day 19 prompt: can't live without. Obviously my family, Dasani water, and tacos! 🌮 In my shop, I can't live without my saw, sander, and @rzmask. I could totally live without all.the.sawdust. and the occasional scorpions (aka shop pets, Nevada-style). But I have a new air filtration system and a dust collection system to handle the dust and plenty of wood scraps to handle the scorpions. 🦂

2

Just rolled over the 1,500 mark! ❤️ Woulda been cool to grab a screenshot of 1,500 exactly...kinda mad about it. 😂 I honestly had no idea I was close to another 00 mark, or I woulda paid more attention. Just means I've gotta hustle to 1,600 so I can get a screenshot. 👊 So grateful for all the love, support, orders, and friendships this maker life has given me. Thank you for being part of my tribe!

13

It's day 18 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-17 If you missed them.
Day 18 prompt: inspiration. My shorties inspire me to work harder, dream bigger, and set a good example. ❤️ They see me succeed, fail, work hard, and pursue a dream. They see me being flexible, resourceful, and resilient. They see me struggle, learn from my mistakes, and grow from it all. I know every step I take is followed by two sets of footprints. 👣👣

3

Woof! 🐕 Had fun making a few of these for a customer. Want one? $25 shipped within the U.S. Leave a comment or send a DM with your dog's breed.

It's day 17 (Happy St. Patrick's Day! ☘️) of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-16 If you missed them.
Day 17 prompt: customers + feedback. I love my customers! Seeing photos of my signs in your homes, reading your reviews...words cannot express how much it means to me. I mean, seriously...swipe to see some of the sweet words customers have shared! ❤️ The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is the little 'extra.' I'm all about giving my customers the little extra. Going the extra mile to get their happy mail to them on time or before. Going the extra mile to make a gift extra-special. Going the extra mile to make sure every customer knows how much their order means to me. Thank you for supporting my small business, BIG dreams, and encouraging me to continue my journey as a maker. ❤️

It's day 15 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-14 If you missed them.
Day 15 prompt: boomerang. Haha Fun prompt! Here are a few tools of my trade. I go through paint brushes like crazy! I always have my new favorites to replace the old favorite I've worn out. If I had a dollar for every worn out paintbrush...😂

2

It's day 14 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-13 If you missed them.
Day 14 prompt: dreams + plans. If I'm dreaming, please don't pinch me. I am so grateful for where I am and how much my business has grown! My dreams and plans are ever-changing as I learn, grow, and figure out this maker life I'm living. Thank YOU for supporting my small business and BIG dreams!

2

Remember that sneak peek I shared earlier? Here's the finished sign. Swipe to see the oars up close. I cut them on my scroll saw and I kinda love them! 🛶

9

It's day 13 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-12 If you missed them.
Day 13 prompt: work clothes. While dressed in cute clothes, don't even think about going near the paint or stain. Ask me how I know. After ruining a ridiculous amount of clothes, I now have a dedicated stash of work clothes. Scrubs, jeans, tanks, sweatshirts...and my work clothes include a face mask and eye protection, which is usually my sunglasses. My favorite "work clothes" are my Heddy J. hoodies, which I don't wear while actually working. Hello, I don't want paint or stain on them! 😂

1

A sneak peek of oars I cut on my scroll saw this morning. Can't wait to show you the finished sign!

3

It's day 12 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-11 If you missed them.
Day 12 prompt: postage + packaging. My Dymo label printer is the single best investment I've made for my shipping department. And by shipping department, I mean me. 😂 I do it all, peeps. From start to happy {mail} finish, I do it all. From making your sign to packaging it, I do it all with a lot of heart and love. ❤️ My signs have shipped to all 50 states, Canada, and Korea. And I don't just ship packages, I ship happy mail. 📬 Every package is shipped via USPS Priority Mail with insurance + tracking number so you can watch your happy mail make its way to you.

3

It's day 10 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-9 If you missed them.
Day 10 prompt: time to relax. Relax? What is this relax you speak of? If you know what relax means, are you even a mom!? 😂 By most people's definition, I don't relax much. I don't watch TV and I like to be productive (organizing, building something, being creative, creating, baking, learning). I like to read (military/war stories, business/entrepreneurship, young adult fiction). I'm an adrenaline junkie (skydiving, bungee jumping, dead man's drop, slingshot) but this season of motherhood isn't conducive to those rushes. In this season of motherhood, my "time to relax" revolves around dance nights, soccer games, snuggling my shorties before school and before bed, and doing things around the house like laying floors, painting walls, building shelves and beds, installing baseboards, light fixtures, a sink, faucet, and garbage disposal, fixing the dishwasher...you know, no rest for the wicked. 😂 My favorite way to relax right now: snuggling all the babies in the family, especially mine! Mine aren't exactly babies anymore but they'll always be MY babies. And we do have a new baby in our family (9 nieces and nephews) for me to snuggle. ❤️ Give me ALL the babies!

1

It's day 9 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-8 If you missed them.
Day 9 prompt: how it's made. My signs are made with lots of Home Depot trips, lots of lumber runs, lots of sawdust and splinters, lots of stain and paint, and all the love! ❤️ I'm a lefty so every sign I paint is painted "backwards." I'll post a video soon of me painting a sign since I'm often asked how I can paint words backwards. I just do. 😁 #leftyworldproblems

2

It's day 6 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-5 If you missed them.
Day 6 prompt: workspace. My business started at my kitchen table with only and jigsaw and a hand sander. Looking at these photos reminds me of how far I've come and my gratitude runs deep. My workspaces are always a work in progress...I just added an air filtration system on Saturday and I'm getting ready to ditch my desk and build a work table the full length of the wall with the windows. Thank you for showing up, cheering me on, and supporting my small business and BIG dreams! I still take over the kitchen table often and clean it off every night for family dinner time. In case you were wondering. 🙄 #grateful

1

The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is the little 'extra.' I love going the extra mile for my customers! #grateful #happymail

3

Shared a shop tour in my stories. My shop is always a work in progress...trashing it with sawdust and cut-offs, cleaning and organizing it, streamlining my setup...I love seeing how others organize their workspaces. If you share yours, tag me, I'd love to see it.

1

It's day 5 of #marchmeetthemaker. Check out previous posts for days 1-4 If you missed them.
Day 5 prompt: photography. Taking photos of my work is a work in progress. I'm better than when I started and need to update all my product photos. Wanna know what I really love? Customer photos! Seriously, my favorite. There is something so humbling and awesome about seeing my work in the wild. Seeing something *I* made in *your* home...words cannot describe it. Thank you for sharing the love, my peeps. ❤️

7

Installed an air filtration system in my shop today. My assistant (the bonehead back there on the shop stool, not pulling his weight) and I will be breathing less dust this year. Not excited about sanding but less sawdust is def something to get excited about. 👊

6

It's day 4 of #marchmeetthemaker and every day this month, I am sharing behind-the-scenes of my business and sharing more about who I am and what I do, with a few surprises for YOU along the way.
Day 4 prompt: favorite to make. I love making all the things...making sawdust (the sweet smell of fresh cut wood...yes, please!), painting words (especially the letters s, g, y, and e), making sarcastic comments (sarcasm is my love language), making a difference (The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is the little 'extra.'), and making customers happy (see my shop reviews, shop link in bio). ❤️

2

Some people have shop dogs. I have shop scorpions. Meet my assistant in the shop today...what shall I name it?

25

It's March, my birthday month (woot woot), and every day this month I am sharing my #marchmeetthemaker prompt with you. Check out day 1 and day 2 if you missed them. You'll wanna stay tuned because I have some fun surprises for YOU this month.
Day 3 prompt: HOW I STARTED. I've been on Etsy as a seller since 2010 when I started listing random things I made here and there. But the real magic began in 2015. Three years ago, my mom asked me to make a family birthday sign for her. I made it during a family vacation in Arizona 🌵...painting the sign in our vacation rental on the Colorado River. On the fly, I took photos of it on the floor of a hotel room. Several months later, I decided to list it on Etsy and my sign business was born. (Thank you, mom! ❤️) My sign business has evolved and grown so much. What started as a little side gig and has become my full-time one and I love it! Building a business is a process and I continue learning and figuring it out as I go. Thank YOU for being part of my tribe and supporting me, my small business, and BIG dreams! ❤️

1

It's National Employee Appreciation Day and this woman right here is the best employee I've ever had! She's hard-working, resourceful, dependable, creative, selfless, funny as hell, and this business wouldn't be what it is today without her. ❤️

9

Yesterday, I shared that it's my birthday month and one way I'm celebrating is sharing a daily #marchmeetthemaker prompt with you. You'll wanna stay tuned because I have some fun surprises for YOU this month.
Day 2 prompt: WHERE. I work from home in Nevada and have a sweet view of the Las Vegas Strip while working in my shop. During crazy busy times, my signs cover pretty much every flat surface...kitchen counters, dining table, island, desk, and floor. My signs have shipped to all 50 states, Canada, and Korea. 🌎 That blows my mind! Words cannot express how grateful I am for yout love and support of my small business and BIG dreams! ❤️

5

Hello and happy March! It's my birthday month and to celebrate, I'm sharing the fun with YOU! Stay tuned for details. 😁 Thought it'd be fun to participate in this #marchmeetthemaker too. Day 1 prompt: YOU. I'm Heddy J. and I'm the maker of hand painted wood signs, cute shorties, and sarcastic ass comments. Creativity has always been part of who I am and I'm so grateful I've been able to turn my part-time side hustle in to my full-time gig. Thank YOU for supporting me and being part of my tribe! So tell me, how many candles do you think I'll have on my pie this year? (I don't like cake. Unless Vin Diesel is jumping out of one, then I LOVE cake. 😂)

5

I have a degree in sarcasm. If you know someone graduating this year who also majors in sarcasm, may I suggest one of these signs...just listed in my shop, link in bio. 😂

11

Have you heard of VERO? It's a new, free app with no ads, and it may become the next big thing in social media. Claim your name now. 👊 I'd love to connect with you there! You can find me at Heddy J.

6

Love this photo shared by a sweet customer. It's so fun seeing my signs in the wild. ❤️🐶 There's an entire section of signs for dog lovers in my shop, link in bio.

4

My baseboard project is basically done. I spent a long time debating on style, size, and material. I debated making my own with wood and a cool router bit, using MDF, or going with baseboard trim. So many options and I'm no interior decorator so it all kinda makes my brain hurt. Lol Grateful that's done.

8

Valentine's Day isn't my jam but I did make two signs. This one (need to add a few more screws) and a hammer + nail sign (see a few posts back). ❤️

5

You guys! This is so, so good! I just finished this Instagram Stories Workshop with Tyler J. McCall. Instagram Stories is the place to be for being seen, heard, and growing on IG and I was surprised by how much good stuff I didn't know. If you'd like to know more, DM me. 👊

3

Shipped this one today. 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

6

Happy Friday! Doing this #fridayintroductions thing a little differently by throwing this out there. It's the rough draft of a #wip. (Note: the correct URL for my VIP club is http://eepurl.com/dilZg9) What are you working on this weekend?

1

Life is better with a dog.
Look how beautiful this sign is from @loveheddyj!
#loveheddyj #heddyj #heddyjbrandrep

15

Woodshop: where talk of nailing, drilling, screwing, and videoing it all happens often and nobody gives the side eye. 😏🔨🔧🔩🎥

14

Nice rack! 😀 Been wanting to get my wood up off the floor. Scored this one by Portamate from Lowe's for $20. Perfect way to spend some Christmas gift card money!

7

Haha A friend called herself a dogaholic. So you know I had to make a sign! ❤️🐶

4

Remember the sneak peek I shared earlier? Here it is! Listed a few new signs in my shop today and this one is ready to ship. Link in bio if you're interested. ❤️🐶

8

A fun sign I made for a customer. Lots of space for keys and leashes. ❤️🐶

Operation: Shop Organization 2018 underway. Getting ready to build more shelving and make the wall above my workbench work harder. Less sucking dust this year! Love my @rzmask and excited to install my new air filtration system! Less sucking dust in 2018. My lungs will thank me so hard! 😷

Customer photos are awesome and I love seeing my signs in your homes! ❤️ Here's to no more lost keys or leashes. Available in my shop, link in bio.
