Back squats have more of a forward lean, and a certain amount of mobility but some say not as much - only in certain areas. Hits more hips, glutes, low back. If you go with a wider stance you put more load on your glutes and adductors. .

#MobilityMay Day 23 is upon us! Let’s lube up the hips and spine! As always, start off with your 5-minute supported squat hold, then move on to the fun.

90/90 Rotations: get into the 90/90 stretch we’ve done a couple times and slowly, and as smoothly as possible, shift your body to the other side! That’s it! If you can do this with no hands, awesome. I need to use my hands, and you may need to sort of get up/stand up a little if you’re hips are real bad. Spend 3 minutes moving through this.

Full Spine Rotation: if you can use a light weight for this, it helps a lot. On your back, one hand up, same side knee up. Now rotate your body away from that arm trying to get your chest to the ground! Keep this nice and smooth and really focus on just opening things up like crazy! 2 minutes each side of smooth movement.

The next exercise in the #turnout series to help strengthen 💪 your rotators and improve your turnout 👊. Retiré (or passé) is one of the most common positions used in dance, especially in classical dance where it’s done in a turned out position. But did you know 🤔 if you’re not using the correct muscles to perform it, you could be at risk for hip injuries 😲

This exercise is a great progression from last weeks clamshell exercise, so make sure you can master that before trying this one. This is also a great way to monitor that you’re using your rotators correctly.
~
~
✅ Start on your side with your bottom leg straight and your top leg in a passé position parallel to the floor (but not touching the floor).
✅ Make sure your core is engaged and your hips are stacked directly on top of each other.
✅ Slowly rotate your top hip in its socket to open your top knee towards the ceiling. Try and go as far as you can without letting your pelvis move or losing control of your core muscles. As you get stronger you’ll be able to move further into your turnout range.
✅ Repeat until you start to feel your deep hip muscles fatigue (usually 15-20 reps).

❌ Don’t let the top hip roll back - that’s cheating! ❌ Don’t let the gluteus maximus 🍑 and hip flexors try to take over. They should stay relatively relaxed the entire time. You can even put your hand on your hip to make sure they’re staying relaxed and that you’re activating the deeper rotator muscles.

~
🏆 Ready for a challenge? Try adding a resistance band around your top leg (anchored to something in front of you) for extra tension. Or try holding the position at the top for 10 seconds without letting your gluts or hip flexors switch on.
