On the dry grasslands of eastern Africa, the Thomson's gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii) grazes in the tall grass. Suddenly, it hears a noise and raises it head. The gazelle is completely still until it notices a lion. In a flash, it bounds into the air and is off and running. The lion charges after it, but the slim, graceful critter is too fast—it’s able to reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour—and outruns the fierce predator. One of the the most commonly found gazelles in Africa, Thomson’s gazelle plays an important role in its ecosystem: it maintains vegetation by grazing and, despites its speed, is still a key food source for many large animals including the lion, cheetah, hyena, and jackal.

Little known fact about me: I’m a major Geek for Space things 🛸
Also as a PSA: The day after tomorrow I’ll be in NYC. While I’ll still have my phone, and while I still will take pictures and occasionally Snapchats, I won’t be using it as often because I want to experience NYC, soul wise. I’ve made a deal with myself that in those whole 2 days, I’ll only use my phone a total of 4 hours or less.

Another great addition to my #AviationGenerationsSeries; the Spitfire, a Mk.VC in desert camouflage in this case, contrasted in flight against the grey of the USAF F-35A. Not sure when or where this photo was taken, maybe someone else can shed some light on it. Timeline wise; the Spitfire first flew as a prototype on March 5, 1936, and the F-35 first flew as the X-35 JSF prototype on October 24, 2000.|#F35 #Spitfire

Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway), this is one of the most iconic sites in Ireland. Originally, there was a church in this location that was already quite old (almost a millenium ago). It was one of four Celtic churches actually. This particular one was chosen by John Comyn, the first Anglo-Norman Archbishop of Dublin, to be elevated to a collegiate church. And by 1212, it would once again be raised this time to a cathedral. For the next 60 years, Saint Patrick's would experience a number of reconstructions and expansions in honor of it's status as a cathedral. In 1311, the Medieval University of Dublin was founded there but would be suppressed with the advent of the Reformation. The Reformation was a tumultuous time for Saint Patrick's (as it was everywhere else). It was during this time that the cathedral was converted into an Anglican church. Under King Edward VI, it was demoted back down to a church, but Queen Mary would later reverse this decision. This back and forth between Catholics and Protestants would continue until the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, where William of Orange defeated King James II. Throughout this time, the cathedral fell into serious disrepair which would not be attended to until 1860. After almost two centuries, Saint Patrick's would finally receive it's much needed reconstruction, which was funded by Sir Benjamin Guinness (yes, that Guinness). Today, Saint Patrick's Cathedral serves as Ireland's National Cathedral. It is used as the location for many of the country's national ceremonies. It is a beautiful building, a must-see if you're ever in Dublin!

The Ordnungspolizei, Order Police), abbreviated Orpo, were the uniformed police force in Nazi Germany between 1936 and 1945. The Orpo organization was absorbed into the Nazi monopoly on power after regional police jurisdiction was removed in favor of the central Nazi government (Verreichlichung of the police). The Orpo was under the administration of the Interior Ministry, but led by members of the Schutzstaffel (SS) until the end of World War II. Owing to their green uniforms, Orpo were also referred to as Grüne Polizei (green police). The force was first established as a centralized organisation uniting the municipal, city, and rural uniformed police that had been organised on a state-by-state basis

The view from the 23rd floor of Hotel Viru in Tallinn... the floor which officially didn't exist. Now a KGB museum, it was once one of the hotel's listening posts with bugging equipment and cameras throughout to keep tabs on guests (and staff). Abandoned in 1991, much of the equipment was broken and left behind as the KGB fled when the Soviet Union began to break up. Like a cross between a Bond film (bugged cufflinks and all) and an Orwell novel, it's a fascinating- and terrifying - insight into a world which existed until a generation ago, a world of paranoia and fear. New blog post is live at mummytravels.com with an account of my visit - Tallinn has so many picturesque attractions but this darker side is not to be missed.

On this day, July 19, 1799, during Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign, a French soldier discovers a black basalt slab inscribed with ancient writing near the town of Rosetta, about 35 miles north of Alexandria. The irregularly shaped stone contained fragments of passages written in three different scripts: Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics and Egyptian demotic. The ancient Greek on the Rosetta Stone told archaeologists that it was inscribed by priests honoring the king of Egypt, Ptolemy V, in the second century B.C. More startlingly, the Greek passage announced that the three scripts were all of identical meaning. The artifact thus held the key to solving the riddle of hieroglyphics, a written language that had been “dead” for nearly 2,000 years.

When Napoleon, an emperor known for his enlightened view of education, art and culture, invaded Egypt in 1798, he took along a group of scholars and told them to seize all important cultural artifacts for France. Pierre Bouchard, one of Napoleon’s soldiers, was aware of this order when he found the basalt stone, which was almost four feet long and two-and-a-half feet wide, at a fort near Rosetta. When the British defeated Napoleon in 1801, they took possession of the Rosetta Stone.

Several scholars, including Englishman Thomas Young made progress with the initial hieroglyphics analysis of the Rosetta Stone. French Egyptologist Jean-Francois Champollion (1790-1832), who had taught himself ancient languages, ultimately cracked the code and deciphered the hieroglyphics using his knowledge of Greek as a guide. Hieroglyphics used pictures to represent objects, sounds and groups of sounds. Once the Rosetta Stone inscriptions were translated, the language and culture of ancient Egypt was suddenly open to scientists as never before.

The Rosetta Stone has been housed at the British Museum in London since 1802, except for a brief period during World War I. At that time, museum officials moved it to a separate underground location, along with other irreplaceable items from the museum’s collection, to protect it from the threat of bombs.

The M-37 or 82-BM-37 (батальонный миномёт) is a Soviet 82 millimeter calibre mortar designed by B.I. Szayrin and accepted into service in 1937. The design of the M-37 is based on the earlier French Brandt mle 27/31 mortar with Russian modifications. The main difference between the 82-PM-37 and the earlier 82-PM-36 was the adoption of a round base-plate, revised traverse/elevation controls, simplified sights and spring-loaded shock absorbers on the bi-pod to reduce the amount of relaying needed between shots. The German designation for captured M-37 mortars was 8.2 cm GrW 274/2(r)

Hauling a Hustler

On 12 March 1957, a specially modified Convair B-36F was used to carry B-58 airframe 4A on a ferry flight from Carswell Air Force Base in Texas to Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. The B-58 airframe was being delivered there for a series of static tests. For the flight, the nose and engine nacelles, along with other components, were removed from airframe 4A. The B-36 had to have its inboard propellers removed to provide enough clearance for the B-58 airframe’s wings. The B-36F used was Air Force serial number 49-2677. The B-58 airframe transported was produced as a test article and was never assigned a USAF serial number. Several views of this odd coupling are seen above, either while the B-36 was on arrival or after it had landed at Wright-Patterson. -
I wanted to also take the time to thank everyone who participated in my ask me a question story feed. Y’all asked a ton of good questions and I had a fun time answering them. I might be doing that again sometime, if that’s something everyone doesn’t mind.

The area which now comprises Sequoia National Park was first home to "Monachee" (Western Mono) Native Americans, who resided mainly in the Kaweah River drainage in the Foothills region of the park, though evidence of seasonal habitation exists as high as the Giant Forest. In the summertime, Native Americans would travel over the high mountain passes to trade with tribes to the East. To this day, pictographs can be found at several sites within the park, notably at Hospital Rock and Potwisha, as well as bedrock mortars used to process acorns, a staple food for the Monachee people.⠀

Tharp's Log, a cabin formed out of a hollowed-out Giant Sequoia log⠀
By the time the first European settlers arrived in the area, smallpox had already spread to the region, decimating Native American populations. The first European settler to homestead in the area was Hale Tharp, who famously built a home out of a hollowed-out fallen giant sequoia log in the Giant Forest next to Log Meadow. Tharp allowed his cattle to graze the meadow, but at the same time had a respect for the grandeur of the forest and led early battles against logging in the area. From time to time, Tharp received visits from John Muir, who would stay at Tharp's log cabin. Tharp's Log can still be visited today in its original location in the Giant Forest. [wikipedia]⠀
