David Giliad’s walk to school takes him an hour each way. His walk climbs and descends through the lush forest of Mount Meru outside of Arusha, Tanzania. He dawns his school uniform as he passes streams, dense brush, and banana tree tunnels along the way.
When I met David he was on his way home, making the climb up a steep and muddy trail. After getting his name and talking to him about school, I came back to one of my compulsory questions which I had forgotten to ask. “How old are you?” I asked. He paused. “I am not sure,” David responded. And with that he disappeared into the dense fog above.
