Many years ago @grantcardone spoke of the four layers to legacy.⠀
When you first begin the path of change. Any healthier, more positive, better, version of you - people question it. ⠀
‘Why you doing this?’ ‘Is gym a temporary thing?’ ‘Why you so happy?’ ⠀
What you are doing is changing who they THINK they want YOU to be. When you start improving who they think you are, they begin actually examining themselves. Deep, I know. ⠀
Example, me - ‘Charles is positive, outgoing cat on IG who filters photos, likes quotes, and is in real estate.’⠀
But that's surface level. First date chatter. Elevator talk. ⠀
As I continue these personal-dev posts your perception of me changes. This ‘new’ Charles was always there, it’s just becoming public. Starting is the hardest part. Pressfield calls it ‘the resistance’. This stage is initial two years.⠀
As you continue the success, growth trajectory, they move to harsher tactics - poking fun, joking, even saying it’s ‘luck’. ⠀
What they are doing is testing to see how invested you are in this new you. If you’re real or fraud.
We all identify as someone - always starts with ‘I am a [banker, foodie, yogi, New Yorker]’. Ex: shy guy becoming public speaker. 9-5er now biz owner.
Positive change only, if negative, people wouldn’t care, glad it ain't them ⠀
And by ‘they’ - social circle, family, colleagues, internet - all of the above. Stage 2 is year 3-4.⠀
Around year five, so long as you are CONSISTENT, they begin to accept this ‘new you’. Going that long isn’t easy. It’ll be lonely, loads of doubt, and abundant questioning of yourself the ENTIRE way.⠀
Like an entrepreneur - you NEVER truly feel comfortable everything will be as smooth as it is now. That constant state of uncertainty, building, and innovating is the fun - and challenge.⠀
And then, if so lucky you've outlasted everyone, namely yourself. A decade later they praise and applaud you. You're the renegade, maverick, disruptor. You moved the needle through sheer will.⠀
Joseph Campbell called this the Hero's Journey (great read). And unbelievable biography of Musk.⠀
Hope this made some sense I’m at Stage 3 - where are you?
