[Long post alert]
You see this? Ya girl has been struggling with drawing, not realizing that this is part of the process. This is what makes an artist…this is what makes greatness. Sticking it out when you feel like you’re failing. I’ve created some BAD drawings these past few weeks (actually I’ve always created some really bad stuff!), but even in my frustration, confusion, and at many times anger, I still pull out a pencil, paper, an iPad, a napkin, whatever and try again.
The process of striving to be better in your craft is one of deep intimacy, you place yourself face to face with the very thing you suck at, and yet you come back for more. Make more bad shit, mess up more drawings, make more mistakes, have more DAFUQ moments! But when this is what you want, you continue to show up, talent will only take you so far, it’s the work that makes it great.
When you love something you nurture it, you work at it, you develop a consistent relationship with it. I haven’t always done that with my art, I’ve taken long ass breaks from it, I’ve allowed fear to stop me from trying, because perfectionism is a beast. Ultimately I have to allow myself to be vulnerable and create terrible work! HA! There is extreme value in this process!
I believe this is why many times the work of creatives is not fully respected and valued by those outside the art sphere, because all you see is the final product, not the struggle within the process to get there. I also believe that is why many of us struggle within the genre because we too also see the final product and compare our in-process mess to someone else’s cleaned up final run.
The value of your work stems from the process! Your growth is in your process.
