CDT Day 23. Tuesday, July 3. Fall River to Monarch Lake. Daily Miles: 29.3. Total Miles: 474.8
Hiked up to James Peak from one of the worst campgrounds I’ve slept on any trail--broken glass, cigarette butts and strewn toilet paper. Got up to James Peak and saw my favorite view of a mountain range I’ve seen in Colorado. The photos I have don’t do it justice. It was a textured and gradual buildup of mountains culminating in Longs Peak and Rocky Mountain National Park. More ridge walks and I experienced my first afternoon thunderstorm of the season, although it was little more than a drizzle.
Deuces Wild, whom I briefly met in the Collegiates, caught up with me and we then ran into Bonefish. The three of us hiked to a great campsite near Monarch Lake that had a picnic table and an old axe to chop wood. And lots of mosquitos.
