The Leuser Ecosystem🌳 is a lush and vibrant landscape, green as far as the eye can see. Millions of Acehnese and North Sumatran people depend on it for their food, water and livelihoods, and for protection against flooding and landslides. #LoveTheLeuser

The rainfall the ecosystem produces, and the clear rivers that run through it, provide millions of local people with clean drinking water as well as irrigation essential for subsistence farming, especially for the region’s most common source of livelihood: water-intensive rice cultivation.

Continuous deforestation of the Leuser Ecosystem has begun to drastically change the region’s landscape, increasing the frequency and intensity of flooding and landslides during the wet season. As local communities lose their forest buffer, more people, homes and villages fall victim to environmental disasters every year. For many local communities, keeping the Leuser Ecosystem standing is a matter of life or death.

Your help in sharing the #LoveTheLeuser message far and wide is crucial as we work to make this special place too popular to destroy. Just be sure to tag #LoveTheLeuser to help build this movement!

The trade in wild animals is not only a moral and ethical issue concerning the suffering of its living victims, but also a conservation crisis. Many, if not all, of the animals in this market originated from the neighbouring Leuser Ecosystem, one of the largest intact rainforests of South East Asia and is the last place on Earth where critically endangered elephants, tigers, rhinos and orangutans still coexist in the wild. Populations of a diversity of species are crashing due to the combined destructive forces of habitat destruction and animal extraction for the wildlife trade. The moral corruption that allows this industry to thrive off the exploitation of endangered and tormented animals must stop if their wild counterparts are to survive into the next decade.

The West African Oil Palm has consumed a majority of the landscape in Sumatra. Palm oil production, wood-pulp plantations, illegal logging, and forest fires are decimating the natural rainforests, pushing many iconic species of wildlife onto the list of critically endangered species, some near extinction.⠀

Cattle can often be seen grazing in the shadow of the oil palms, ridding the floor of unwanted weeds. ⠀

With palm oil plantations being a regular window view while driving through Sumatra, so, too, are the seemingly infinite number of trucks packed full with the lucrative fruit.⠀

As more and more natural forest is encroached and destroyed for plantations, more and more roads are required to permit access deeper and deeper into the jungle for trucks like these and other vehicles.⠀

Many of the roads popping up are illegal, just like many plantations, and with more access for vehicles there is more access for other illegal activity like poaching. So while loggers and plantation workers are able to travel deeper into the heart of the rainforest, so are the hunters who follow.⠀

Palm oil production not only affects the rainforests and wildlife, it also has a negative impact on people living in or near them. The West African Oil Palm consumes 20-40 gallons of water a day. ⠀

An average plantation takes up roughly 120,000 acres of land, with about 50 trees per acre. That's a lot of water! Because of this, people are losing the water from their wells and are forced to seek water elsewhere, likely having to purchase the water on an already tight budget. ⠀

It was believed that land from palm oil plantations would not be able to be restored due to the severe loss of water and nutrients in the soil. Luckily the folks at Orangutan Information Centre have proved this belief wrong, with a handful of successful reforestation projects at multiple sites once home to palm oil plantations.⠀

Photo by @celinaxchien Today is the International Day of Biodiversity. Biodiversity is the variety of all life on Earth, in all of its countless forms and interactions; from the scale of DNA to entire biomes. It is the product of billions of years of evolution, and is an infinitely complex and beautiful concept, incorporating the information and interactions of all living organisms existing now AND all that have ever lived.
.
With evolution, comes extinction; a naturally occurring phenomenon essential to natural selection, the fossil record rate of which is referred to as the 'background rate' of extinction. Over the 3.8 billion years that life has existed on Earth, 5 mass extinctions have occurred; these are events of widespread and rapid loss of biodiversity, one of the most famous being the extinction of all non-avian dinosaurs. These mass extinctions were caused by massive volcanic eruptions, ice ages, colliding continents, meteorites- you get the idea: "the sky is falling" type events. It takes millions of years for biodiversity to recover. .

We are now in the midst of Earth's 6th mass extinction, caused by 1 single species: us.
The insatiable appetite of human consumption, aggravated by relentless population growth, is devastating global biodiversity. Human influence has not only increased species extinction rates by 1,000 times the fossil record background rate, we have also reduced the global population of vertebrate species by 58% from 1970 to 2012. This enormous and irreversible loss, if allowed to continue, will ultimately threaten humanity. .

We must act now to protect biodiversity. If not for moral responsibility, then for self preservation; to quote Prof David Macdonald, "without biodiversity, there is no future for humanity." .

Ripped from the cradle of family and forest, this young long-tailed macaque has become a commodity, destined for a lifetime of unforgivable and cruel imprisonment. Found on a roadside in the city of Medan, Indonesia sitting in a dilapidated market stall overflowing with captive wildlife; the multicoloured cages crying out to the passing shoppers and tourists. This little macaque was at the bottom of a stack of cages, next to the endangered softshell turtles, terrified of the taunting shoes that kicked at him as they walked by.

One year ago I spoke in public for the first time in my life. Not to fellow students in school, not to friends or family in a private setting, not to colleagues. Not that it was a big deal in the grand scheme of things - the Downers Grove Public Library set up 100 chairs for me, and my audience took up about 20 seats. Sure the audience had friends and family, but it also consisted of folks I've only met once, and folks I've never met at all. I was a nervous wreck before it was time to take the stage, but once I started it was all okay. You'd think I wouldn't feel this way anymore after doing it so many times, but for some reason my nerves are still a mess right before I present each lecture. That all goes away the second I start talking, and it's always worth it. ⠀

It's been a massive learning experience for me, but the part I enjoy the most out of public speaking is being able to share the stories and images and see how much of an impact they actually have on audience members in so many different ways. I've had folks reach out to me after an event to say how they've changed the way the shop at grocery stores, or how they stopped using plastic as much as possible. Some folks have gone out of their way to donate even more to the sanctuary after seeing my presentation. Some have simply asked what more they can do to help. Whatever the case is, I know it is because something from my lecture inspired them to help create a change that betters the lives of others. In turn, this inspires me to keep sharing.⠀

All of this makes it harder for me to say I need to take a step back from holding these shows for a while. I don't want to, but there are lots of reasons why I need to. I'll be holding one final show on Sunday June 3rd at Miskatonic Brewing Co. between 4-6pm. If you or someone you know is interested in joining in on this lecture, please share this info with others and purchase your tickets asap.⠀

All proceeds from tickets will be donated to the Sumatran Wildlife Sanctuary, and each ticket includes one free beer from the taproom. Space is limited and tickets can be purchased at the link in my bio. Hope to see you there!⠀

While visiting Tangkahan @mattstirn and I came down to this confluence to work on some long exposures after the clouds took over the sky. While crossing in the shallows, my sandal somehow fell off in one of the rapids and got carried away in the current. Camera, tripod, and a pack of Matt's graduated filters in hand, I rushed back to shore to hand everything off to him before throwing off my other sandal and diving in after the runaway footwear. ⠀

Little moments like these, no matter how trivial they may seem, are what I love about adventures. Join me on June 3rd at Miskatonic Brewing Co. from 4-6pm where I will share stories like this and many more in my presentation about my travels in Sumatra and the conservation efforts in place by the Orangutan Information Centre and the Sumatran Wildlife Sanctuary.⠀

All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the sanctuary, and each ticket includes one free beer from Miskatonic's taproom. Click the link in my bio to learn more and purchase tickets today.⠀

This will be my last show for a long while and space is limited. Hope to see you there!⠀

The sun fell low, shadows consuming the landscape, and the mist rose high into the sky. The jungle is the most magical environment I know. I've dreamt of it ever since I was a child and every day I get lost in the daydreams of returning one day. ⠀

Come out to Miskatonic Brewing Co. on June 3rd from 4-6pm where I will share images and stories from my travels in Sumatra and the conservation efforts in place by the Orangutan Information Centre and the Sumatran Wildlife Sanctuary.⠀

More Life Saved

A female orangutan was saved from Lima Subvillage, Perkebunan Bukit Lawang village, Bahorok Subdistrict, Langkat district - North Sumatera (Friday, 19/05/18). This orangutan was found around the houses of local people and kept moving to the rubber and oil palm plantations. To prevent the fatal conflict incident, OIC HOCRU team together with GLNP Authority, North Sumatran BKSDA, and some local guides worked together to rescue the orangutan. After sedated and through the general health check, this orangutan found in the good health condition. Named Nayla, she was being translocated back to the Leuser forest the same day. Conducting the Ramadhan fasting didn’t stop our HOCRU team to rescue Nayla. Keep supporting our team by donating now!

Lagi, Satu Individu Orangutan Terselamatkan
Satu individu orangutan betina kembali terselamatkan dari Dusun V, Desa Perkebunan Bukit Lawang, Kecamatan Bahorok, Kabupaten Langkat – Propinsi Sumatera Utara (Jum'at, 19/05/18). Male proboscis monkeys are an odd looking bunch - known for their large nose, which can exceed 4” (10.2cm) in length, and hangs lower than the mouth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Less talked about, but still hard to miss is their... erm, other appendage... Males have a permanently erect red penis!

Update from @bksdaaceh . The little guy has improved over the last few days, BKSDA are making sure he gets the proper nutrition and he seems to be getting stronger, but according to the Senior Veterinarian, Dr Rosa, he could make a full recover is he doesn’t contract the Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes Virus (EEHV), which seems to effect many of the young orphan elephant once in captivity. Time will tell, but for the time being, he’s look better 😊 @wildlifeasia @haka_sumatra @socp.official @rainforestactionnetwork @racingextinction @nadyahutagalung @the_lokefoundation Help us, make a donation, link in my bio #forgottenelephants

I feel so incredibly blessed to be one of the few people on this planet who can say they’ve seen wild orangutans. Sumatra you were magic - a land of towering trees and water dragons and orange forest people full of curiosity and personality and undeniable intelligence. Our trek has truly been one of the most special experiences of my life.
With that being said, what these pictures don’t show is the sheer vastness of the countless palm oil plantations surrounding this stunning jungle ecosystem. It’s one of those things you hear about at home but can never really understand the sad, desperate reality of the situation being so geographically and therefore mentally removed from it. I can now understand and appreciate the urgency and severity of the #palmoil crisis.
Please make yourself aware of the palm oil you are consuming. The chances are very high that the palm oil you consume comes from a plantation on land where orangutans once roamed in peace. Be a conscious consumer and you can be one more piece in the puzzle to saving this magical species.

Orangutans are born with an ability to reason and think. They are one of humankind's closest relatives, sharing nearly 97% of the same DNA. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Capturing this on camera was one of my favorite moments in Borneo. Coming out of my hut in the jungle to meet this young female orangutan trying to hide from the rain. She was quite clever - I watched her as she tried to craft a homemade umbrella out of leaves, fail, then decide to just play in it.

Regrann from @oneworldanimal - #thankyouinstagram We can not afford to stay neutral when it comes to protecting innocent helpless animals from abuse, torture, suffering, endangerment, and extinction. Animals are the anima of Earth. They are the very breath of air, soul, life, spirit of the planet. They are living, breathing, sentient, intelligent beings, part of our own souls, part of our happiness, inspiration, purpose and goals. When we save animals, we save ourselves. Kudos to @instagram for helping combat animal cruelty and abusive wildlife tourism! Instagram has launched a new alert that pops up whenever a user harnesses a hashtag that could be associated with behavior harmful to animals.

Searching or clicking on hashtags such as #koalaselfie, #elephantride or #dolphinkiss will reveal a pop-up message that reads, “Animal abuse and the sale of endangered animals or their parts is not allowed on Instagram. You are searching for a hashtag that may be associated with posts that encourage harmful behavior to animals or the environment.”
We applaud this effort by #Instagram and encourage everyone to be thoughtful about interactions with wild animals and the environment to help avoid exploitation. #emptythetanks #keepwildlifewild #racingextinction #adoptdontshop #bethechange - #regrann

Another critically endangered Sumatran tiger was caught this week after two villagers were killed. Forest across Sumatra is still being cleared at an alarming rate mostly for palm oil expansion. The palm oil industry must adopt an 100 percent no deforestation policy immediately. Run away climate change is all around us, flooding, lose of top soil and water catchment areas are being depleted rapidly. Then poachers move in and take Indonesia’s last tigers, elephants, rhinos and orangutans, all we’ll be left with is a monoculture of oil palms.. Conflic palm oil destroys and kills essential life but as consumers we can decide to make a difference by stopping to buy unsustainble palm oil products or campaign against companies that continue to kill the leuser!! It’s been a hard week for conservation, meet Rahul, I was with @socp.official on the day of his confiscation from a village on the edge of the Tripa peat swamp, the orangutan capital of the world, within the Leuser Ecosystem, the last place in the world where orangutans, tigers, rhinos and elephants still share the same forest. Rahul was taken from him mother at an early age, she was probably killed in front of him by poachers, trying make a quick buck. Sadly sometime after his rescue, before his planned rehabilitation and release he contracted some kind of encephalitis and was badly brain damaged ever since. Recently he contracted another illness and he passed away just a few days ago. The team at @socp.official loved the guy, even with his full time care. I’d only seen him from time to time during his stay at the quarantine centre, he was a beautiful orangutan, his life, far from perfect, but I didn’t want his passing to go by without you knowing about him. His life mattered, as all lives matter. My heart is broken. Please share to educate others on the cruelty of humans and the destruction of precious habitats due to the greediest of the palm oil industry. Rahul’s story deserves to be heard! #Repost @paulhiltonphoto ・・・

Update on the elephant injured a couple of days ago, really great to hear the elephant is making a recovery! #SumatranElephant

Regrann from @paulhiltonphoto - It looks like he’s bouncing back🐘. His wounds still look pretty severe. But not sure about any reintroduction back into the location he was found. Sumatra is so behind on elephant conservation, that why we are pushing hard to change that. Help us directly with a contribution to our Forest & Elephant patrols! Link in bio :)

Documenting fresh Malayan sun bear scratch marks on a tree in Batu Rongring, North Sumatra. Sun bears regularly frequent the buffer zone and are at risk of being trapped in snares that locals claim are for wild pigs.
