Given their age difference, it's unlikely (tho not impossible) that the photographer George Tice and the painter Edward Hopper ever met, but I like to think they might have crossed paths in a diner or a bodega or a filling station late one night. And, after, told no one.

We took the photo of this swan in 1999 when visiting NYC. Now, 19 years later, the swan is at home again:
We are honoured to announce that Nailya Alexander Gallery @nailyaalexandergallery will represent our work from now on in NYC. We are amazed to see our names next to such great artists we have admired for a long time.
.
We'll have our first solo show at Nailya Alexander Gallery next week!

August Kleinzahler in London Review of Books writes: “The absence of human forms except as props makes Tice resemble Edward Hopper, as he does in a variety of other ways: subject matter, a sense of desolation or loneliness. Tice’s Phone Booth, 3 a.m., Rahway, New Jersey, 1974, with the lit booth placed beside an empty highway, with heavily shadowed trees in the background, could not be any more Hopper-like.” #georgetice #augustkleinzahler #nailyaalexandergallery #platinumprint

George Tice (b. 1938, Newark)
Porch, Monhegan Island, Maine
1971. Platinum/palladium print. The Monhegan Island home where Porch was photographed has inspired painters and photographers alike. The painter Rockwell Kent, who built the home, was its first resident — and such paintings as Winter, Monhegan Island, 1907, are testament to his affection for the Maine island. He often received visitors such as Robert Henri, who later wrote of his experiences, “I have never seen anything so fine.” Jamie Wyeth, the son of the late realist painter Andrew Wyeth, was residing in the home when Tice visited in 1971. Tice discovered the home while lodging with the island’s lighthouse keeper nearby. #georgetice #nailyaalexandergallery #platinumprint

Before there was Exxon, there was Esso. Tice has revealed the unmistakable essence of American post-war design in this photograph: from the aquiline neon sign, to the glistening chrome that frames the 1970s Chevy Impala. The bright, springy neon shimmers before a background of melodramatic sky and architecture. Printed from three negatives in double-coated platinum palladium, 36 x 28 inches. #platinum #georgetice #nailyaalexandergallery

Ann Rhoney, Reflection, 1977. Rhoney is obsessed with luminosity. With a photographer’s eye for the split-second and a painter’s gift for suggesting the eternal, Rhoney transmutes her gelatin silver photographs into scenes we don’t so much see in real life as conjure from our memories. #annrhoney #nailyaalexandergallery #vermeerlight #paintedphotography #lifeincolor

Visited a few galleries today on a class trip with my photography class! Had such a sweet time and I’m really emo about the fact that there’s less than two weeks left of class :( Saw probably 80 different images today by like 15 different artists but here are some that I really like, and a couple detail closeups.

The catalog for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2012 exhibition “Faking It” wrote on Ann Rhoney’s Silk Dress Coming, “…the silver dress undulates like molten steel, and its carefully positioned streaks of rust and lavender rhyme with those of the admirer’s übermasculine conveyance. “Ann Rhoney: Life in Color” is on view through July 20. #nailyaalexandergallery #annrhoney #lifeincolor #metmuseum #fakingit #fashion #fashionphotography

Venice, always elegant and always mysterious. A window on the East as St Petersburg is a window on the West, captured so beautifully here in Alexey Titarenko's 'Gondolas, Venice' 2001 @photolondonfair. It is part of a beautiful ensemble of works by Russian, Latin American and British photographers presented by Nailya Alexander. #photolondon #alexeytitarenko #nailyaalexandergallery

Alexey Titarenko is in “The Short Story of Photography” by Hayden Smith. The book is a new innovative introduction to the subject of photography. Simply constructed, it explores 50 key photographs from the first experiments in the early 19th century to digital photography. #alexeytitarenko #nailyaalexandergallery #historyofphotography #longexposure #fineartphotography #laurencekingpublishing

The headless Feather. 2009 / Les Fleurs du mal. 2009.
A feather with the torn-off head is like a chicken with the chopped-off head – everything, everything is in quasi dismemberment. If not to see/think so, dynamically, plastically, almost gently but nevertheless nervously, as an electric discharge – beautiful but only from outside as Baudelaire. As Marina Ivanovna Tsvetaeva's biography. Incessant privilege of affectation.

Stealing beauty. 2013 / Beauté volée. 2013 г.
Stealing beauty – a phenomenal concept. Here it is the stealing beauty of stealing colour. The stealing beauty of all what is impossible to call any concrete adjective, it is not a contrasting overflowing of tenderness into an almost invisible flush. Stealing – hopeless and blissful, always visible among motley fellows by the remarkable quality of the given. But always a hundred times more desirable because it is timid and erotic cubed, because it is obviously innocent.
