Plant local…it’s a thing😉 When I started off gardening, I’d head straight to a box store and stock up on their flowers come the first nice day of spring. Then, I’d be sad when they faired just okay, or not at all in my garden. Then, think of my horror when I learned that some of these plants have been sprayed with bee-killing pesticides😱 There are so many reasons to grow native plants as much as possible. The first and most obvious one is, they’re native…they are used to not only growing, but thriving in your climate. When you live in Maine, that’s a biggie! Secondly, they serve as an important part of your home ecosystem…proving not only food and housing to your pollinator friends, but to a whole host of other organisms🐝🦋🐛 Thirdly…they are low maintenance…LOW!! Who doesn’t need more of those kind of plants in their garden! Fourth, native plants use less water, helping conserve an incredible valuable resource, but also making them drought-resistant. And lastly, they are total eye candy to have around your property! Winning🙌 Milkweed, Jack in the Pulpit, Solomon’s Seal and violets are my favorite natives around our place. What’s a favorite around your area? 💚

What to #plant in #2018.
Amsonia tabernaemontana ‘Short Stack’
Also called Dwarf blue star, this grows to only about half the size (10” tall and to 18” wide.) of the species, making it well suited for gardens with limited space. It performs best in full to partial sun and is appreciative of moist, well-drained soil. The sky blue flowers appear in early spring above the clean, dark green foliage. Try planting 'Short Stack' in a mess and along bed edges for a winning display. For a neater appearance, particularly for shade-grown plants, consider cutting back stems by 1/2 to 1/3 after flowering to promote bushy growth and, if desired, a more rounded foliage mound. Provide full sun to light shade and average to dry soil.
Genus name honors 18th-century Virginian physician Dr. Charles Amson. Specific epithet honours Jakob Theodor von Bergzabern (d. 1590) who Latinized his name as Tabernaemontanus.
An easy-to-grow plant which is best massed in informal settings such as native plant gardens, shade gardens or open woodland areas. Also appropriate for borders or containers.
