My name is Lokhimai and I’m 50 years old. My younger sibling Manimala and I have been carrying humans who queue up for the morning safari at Kaziranga for several years now, even with my elephant’s memory, I forget when we began this routine. Each day, it’s the same story. Spot Rhinos, get closer so the anxious humans can flash their cameras, move this way and that for a better view. Wait as they take more pictures. If I help them spot a hog deer or swamp deer, they are happier. So is my mahout. They’re excited to spot wild elephants too. Me? I’m domesticated, so I’m a performing monkey. Errr elephant. The mahout says “good morning” and I have to raise my trunk. That makes people swoon and some of them feed me bananas and take pictures with me after the safari. I love the bananas. .
