With a heavy heart, I share this news and hope that Sudan's legacy will awaken us to protect this magnificent and fragile planet. Yesterday, Joseph Wachira, 26 comforted Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino moments before he passed away. Sudan lived a long, healthy life at the conservancy after he was brought to Kenya from Czech republic in 2009. He died surrounded by people who loved him after suffering from age-related complications that led to degenerative changes in muscles and bones combined with extensive skin wounds. Sudan has been an inspirational figure for many across the world. Thousands have trooped to Ol Pejeta to see him and he has helped raise awareness for rhino conservation. The two female northern white rhinos left on the planet are his direct descendants. Research into new Assisted Reproductive Techniques for large mammals is underway due to him. The impact that this special animal has had on conservation is simply incredible. And there is still hope in the future that the subspecies might be restored through IVF.
In 2009, I had the privilege of following this gentle hulking creature on his journey from the snowy Dour Krylov zoo in the Czech Republic to the warm plains of Kenya, when he was transported with three of his fellow Northern White Rhinos in a last ditch effort to save the subspecies. It was believed that the air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed—and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time, there were 8 Northern white rhinos alive, all in zoos. Today, we are witnessing the extinction of a species that had survived for millions of years but could not survive mankind. Let's protect these magnificent creatures. #SudanForever#WorthMoreAlive #OlPejetaRhinos #NorthernWhiteRhinos #protectrhinos #DontLetThemDisappear #rhinos #saverhinos #stoppoaching #kenya #northernkenya #africa #everydayafrica #photojournalism #amivitale #repost

What do you think of our KURA Opportunity Kit bag?
This waterproof bag holds four reusable pads, underwear and soap, has a separate zippered section to hold the soiled pads and a handle for carrying and hanging.
We designed it with the help of KURA friend, ⭐️Laura Megroz⭐️and @chandler4corners.
We hope to raise enough funds to purchase 1000 of them for our girls in northern Kenya 🇰🇪.

Carrying on with the elephant theme and a little further north is Sarara Camp, in the heart of Namunyak Conservancy in Samburu, Northern Kenya. In the middle of “nowhere”, pretty much the only noise is either that of your fellow guests, from the insects and birds - or from the many visitors at the waterhole, which sits just below the swimming pool. Bliss. Simply put, it was living the dream💞🐘💞@sararacamp

A small part of the Milgis Lugga in Northern Kenya starting to fill up!! When it floods and breaks its banks you cannot cross this area- sometimes having to wait up to 12hours for the water levels to go down!! The flood plain is 9km wide at this area. Read about it on our blog- link in our bio

The earth 🌏 has been crying along w us. Just as our skin speaks to us about distress in uproars and Inflammation, so does the earth. The crazy weather changes and flooding, dry lands crumbling and burning, and the massive extinction of so many rare and beautiful animals, are all voices screaming for us to be accountable. Let us all be committed and courageous in our mission to heal our earth. In this journey, I’m sure we will heal ourselves as well.

If you went back 50 years, this is where one of the densest populations of black rhinos lived but today most people living here have never seen a rhino in their life despite it being the most perfect habitat for them. In 2 generations, this animal was poached almost to extinction. These communities and people like Kamara hold the key to saving Africa's great animals.

Petra is a first year student at Don Bosco Secondary School in Embu, Kenya. Her secondary school education has been made possible by her generous sponsor(in photo).
Petra’s home is in the highlands of Komote Village in Kenya’s Lake Turkana Region. She is the eldest of five children.
She has this to say, “My dear sponsor, I will not let you down. I remember well the quote that says, Effective learning begins with the right attitude. I will achieve my goals and then help my community”.
Many qualified students from northern Kenya like Petra are in need of financial aid in order to continue on to secondary school and fulfill their dreams of an education. We currently have 32 students who’s secondary schooling is being funded through the KURA Project’s Educational Sponsorship Program.
Education=Opportunity, Education=Hope.

Photo by @amivitale. Jan Stejskal from Dvur Kralove Zoo (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) comforts Sudan as he takes his last breath. Moments before he died, Sudan was surrounded by love, together with the people who committed their lives to protecting him and giving him the good life he enjoyed. There were the directors and people from the Dvůr Králové Zoo, staffers and his six dedicated keepers from Ol Pejeta, who spent more time with him than their own children. Veterinarians and other people from Kenya Wildlife Services were present as well. Most of them had been crying for days. The sky opened up. Rain poured down and he perked up for a moment. When he died, it was silent except for one little go-away-bird chirping ‘go away, go away, go away.’ Poaching is not slowing down. It’s entirely possible, even likely, that if the killing continues, these rhinos—along with elephants and a host of lesser known plains animals—will be functionally extinct in our lifetime. I only hope that this will be a wake-up call. We can often forget that the best protectors of these landscapes are the local communities themselves. Their efforts to preserve community cohesion is ultimately the best immunization against forces that threaten both their wildlife and way of life.

I have launched a print sale of the last of the northern white rhinos with 100% of the proceeds going to @olpejeta so that they can continue on their mission of protecting and fighting for some of the world's most vulnerable creatures. Have you ever dreamt of witnessing the great migration of wildebeest or going nose-to-trunk with a baby elephant? Look no further than #MyAfrica, Conservation International’s virtual reality experience, where you can journey to Kenya and back in just 10 minutes.

I am thrilled that #MyAfrica, the blue chip VR film about the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) that I helped direct with Emmy Award-winning @PassionPicturesFilms for @conservationorg launches this Friday, April 20 at the @Tribeca Film Festival in NYC! It is screening at the Tribeca Festival Hub in NYC as part of Tribeca Immersive from April 20-28. Then, on April 30 it will make its online debut on Conservation International’s website. What a privilege to work with these talented guys @camcampkin @gregwdennis @waldo_etherington @deep_vr

The flu caused many children to miss a week or more of school this year. As every parent knows, catching up on school work is hard. Imagine if your child missed a week of school every month???
For many girls who live in northern Kenya this is a reality...and not because of the flu but because of poverty and the inability to afford basic menstrual hygiene products.
It is especially important for girls in Grade 8 to not miss school as they are studying for the exams that will determine if they will qualify to go on to secondary school.
These girls from Sirata Oirobi Primary School in Samburu are all smiles as they receive KURA Opportunity Kits. They know they now have what they need to stay in school.

#Rhino #Fatu #northernwhiterhino #protectrhinohorn #rhinohabitat #killingstopswhenbuyingdoes Regrann from @natgeo - Photo by @amivitale. Fatu roams the 700 acre enclosure at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) where she has lived alongside her mother, Najin and her grandfather, Sudan, since she was translocated from the Dvur Kralove Zoo (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) in the Czech Republic. Since the passing of Sudan, Fatu and her mother Najin are the last remaining members of her species, the Northern White Rhino.
The plight of wildlife and the conflict between poachers and increasingly militarized rangers has received much-needed attention. But very little has been said about the indigenous communities on the front lines of the poaching wars, and the incredible work being done to strengthen them. We often forget that the best protectors of these landscapes are the local communities. Their efforts are ultimately the best immunization against forces that threaten both their wildlife and way of life. My hope is that Sudan’s legacy serves as a catalyst to awaken humanity to this reality.
