Photo by @amivitale. At Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in Northern Kenya, Mary Lengees, one of Reteti's first female elephant keepers, caresses Suyian, the first resident. Suyian was rescued in September 2016 when she was just four weeks old.

The Mathews Range, where the Namunyak Conservancy and @r.e.s.c.u.e are situated, is home to Africa's second-largest elephant population. Community-based Samburu wildlife keepers there are working to rehabilitate abandoned and orphaned elephants in order to eventually return them to the nearby wild herds.
This elephant sanctuary is the culmination of a two-decades long process of tipping conservation upon its head, protecting wildlife for, and not just from, people. In that sense the sanctuary is as much about people as it’s about elephants.
From April 30th, you can visit the sanctuary virtually through #MyAfrica, a VR experience I helped direct with the incredible @lupitanyongo as the voice over for @conservationorg, and honored to have learned from the brilliant @PassionPicturesFilms @camcampkin@gregwdennis @waldo_etherington @3d_vision3 and @deep_vr which debuted at @tribeca Film Festival this past week. Photo by @amivitale. Amos Leleruk, an elephant keeper at the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in Northern Kenya distributes two liter bottles of special formula during feeding time. Eating is a messy, slurpy affair that happens every three hours around the clock for a total of 8 feedings per day. As the first ever community owned and run sanctuary in all of Africa, @r.e.s.c.u.e provides a home for elephant calves orphaned due to poaching, human wildlife conflict and drought related causes. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is as much about the people as it is about elephants.

Photo by @amivitale. Mary Lengees is one of the dedicated keepers caring for orphaned elephants at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) the first indigenous-owned and run elephant sanctuary in northern Kenya. She is one of the first indigenous Samburu women elephant keepers in all of Africa.
Traditionally in Kenya, women are married young and are meant to take care their children and homes. Although women had never been keepers before, the community has embraced the new program. Today, Reteti has a total of 5 women keepers. The community is excited to hear what these women have accomplished, and rush to them when they return home to learn news of each of the elephants in their care.

Empowering women is crucial to counteract the increasing pressure placed on this fragile landscape. Reteti is opening a door to a world of possibilities where women are equally entitled to working on their own land and protecting their own wildlife. Reteti is changing the way these communities relate to wildlife, and this brings a sense of pride and responsibility to the women working at the sanctuary. They know that by caring for the elephants, their efforts are reducing poaching and human-wildlife conflict.

Photo by @amivitale. Most of Northern Kenya is arid country, scorched and roasting under the equatorial sun, and sometimes going for months or even years without a drop of rain. The landscapes vary from craggy, volcanic cinder fields to impassable areas of sand-dune systems and gritty scrub. Sometimes, hidden in the middle of it all, there are hidden gems like this, a water hole surrounded by old lava. Follow @amivitale for more stories from Northern Kenya.

While the UK is introducing one of the world's toughest ivory bans, and China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are strengthening their own bans, the US is taking steps backwards, to ease the import of so called “elephant trophies.” Dave Matthews Band (@davematthewsband) is taking a stand for the elephants and for community based conservation. #Regram #RG @natgeo: Photo by @amivitale With a heavy heart, I share this news and hope that Sudan's legacy will awaken us to protect this magnificent and fragile planet. Yesterday, Joseph Wachira, 26 comforted Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino left on this planet moments before he passed away. Sudan lived a long, healthy life at the conservancy after he was brought to Kenya from @safari_park_dvur_kralov in the #czechrepublic in 2009. He died surrounded by people who loved him at @olpejeta after suffering from age-related complications that led to degenerative changes in muscles and bones combined with extensive skin wounds. Sudan has been an inspirational figure for many across the world. Thousands have trooped to Ol Pejeta to see him and he has helped raise awareness for rhino conservation. The two female northern white rhinos left on the planet are his direct descendants. Research into new Assisted Reproductive Techniques for large mammals is underway due to him. The impact that this special animal has had on conservation is simply incredible. And there is still hope in the future that the subspecies might be restored through IVF.
In 2009, I had the privilege of following this gentle hulking creature on his journey from the snowy Dour Krylov zoo in the Czech Republic to the warm plains of Kenya, when he was transported with three of his fellow Northern White Rhinos in a last ditch effort to save the subspecies. It was believed that the air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed—and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time, there were 8 Northern white rhinos alive, all in zoos. Today, we are witnessing the extinction of a species that had survived for millions of years but could not survive mankind. Follow @olpejeta and @amivitale to learn more about how we can protect these magnificent creatures.

KURA Project student, James, is currently in his second year at Alliance High School. AHS is located in Kikuyu, Kenya and is considered one of the top secondary schools in the country 🇰🇪.
James recently completed his exams for the term with results that placed him #3 out of 405 students 🎉.
These results are extremely impressive considering his humble background.
James comes from the upper Northern part of Kenya, in a very harsh and dry climatic region at a centre called Korr, in Laisamis District, Marsabit County.
His family mostly relies on relief food from the government and other non-governmental organizations to supplement what his father is able to make through his small business that supports his wife and 10 children.
James comes from a small community called the Rendille tribe who are predominantly nomadic pastoralist people who rely entirely on livestock such as camels, goats and sheep for their livelihood. 🐪🐐🐑
Again, we congratulate James for his hard work, perseverance and his determination to succeed.
Providing the gift of education for students like James means the world 🌍. It means the opportunity to dream of a brighter future for themselves and their families.
Education=Opportunity, Education=Hope.

THE GATHERING OF THE CLANS: It’s quite a sight: the gathering of the tribes of northern Kenya in their brilliant dress; a showcase of music and dance; and a beauty pageant of camels - the treasured possessions of the people of the north. Set of the blazing hot, wind-whipped shores of Lake Turkana, the Marsabit Lake Turkana Cultural Festival, which runs next weekend from 28-30 June, provides the unique chance to meet and mix with the twelve tribes that reside there including the Turkana, the Rendille, the Boran and the Gabbra. It’s also the northern people’s own chance to mix, mingle and make peace with one another.

Photograph by David Chancellor @chancellordavid - the perfect storm - a Leopard sits with a calf taken from a local village, northern Kenya - Carnivore numbers across Africa have declined significantly, and one of the main causes is direct conflict with humans. In northern Kenya they are especially vulnerable to conflict because they live in or adjacent to areas inhabited by nomadic pastoralists and come into regular conflict with local people over livestock depredation. Conflict occurs when they attack livestock and herders retaliate by fatally shooting, spearing, or poisoning them. While there is a wealth of research on human-wildlife conflict and management suggestions related to other pastoral groups like the Maasai, there is very little information on conflict in Samburu. With the understanding that carnivore populations, conflict dynamics, and methods for alleviating it varies from region to region, I’m working here with @ewasolions who are conducting research to address human-carnivore conflict among Samburu pastoralists to understand the unique factors that shape conflict in this particular region - to see more of my work with these amazing carnivores follow me here @chancellordavid @thephotosociety @everydayextinction - follow the amazing work of @ewasolions here #carnivores #conserving #conservation #northernkenya #kenya #africa #lion

Happy World Giraffe Day! In addition to caring for elephants, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary also cares for orphaned reticulated giraffe (among other animals). Here, Lekupania received a kiss from one of his charges. Each time a new rescue giraffe comes to Sarara, the three giraffe who have been successfully re-wilded return to the sanctuary to welcome the newcomer. They must have some way of communicating and knowing these babies are there?

Regrann from @r.e.s.c.u.e - Orphaned baby elephants of the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) spend most of their day in the wild, learning to BE wild. They spend every day from 6am to 6pm in the wildness learning to graze, browse and be a part of the wild so that when it’s time to re-introduce them, they will be prepared.
We at Reteti are proud to operate in partnership with Conservation International (@conservationorg) who provide critical operational support and work to scale the Reteti community-centered model to create lasting impacts worldwide.
We're are excited and honored that @davematthewsband, in collaboration @conservationorg, have launched a fundraising @prizeo to help support the work we do. Photograph by David Chancellor @chancellordavid of Sir David Attenborough talking with a blind black rhino calf Nicky @lewa_wildlife northern Kenya - “I’ve always felt that Sir David Attenborough is part of my family, an uncle maybe, who travelled the World bringing stories of other Worlds to us. He’d talk to us through that magic window, presenting us with all manner of marvellous creatures seemingly known only to him. Many years, and a lifetime later, I found myself sitting in a Land Rover listening to that voice of reason; we all know and understand far more of the world thanks to Sir David. A world that has changed immeasurably, but the man remains constant, a bright light that we should all follow. It’s clear to me that If we do not lead by example and teach our children that it’s not our God given right to take what we want, when we want, then there is little hope for the myriad of creatures who inhabitant this planet alongside us. We must lead by example. Their World is no longer their own, infinite can no longer be used in Africa or elsewhere, animals are finite - with Sir David Attenborough 'Africa’ for the @bbc - to see more of my work and projects follow me here @chancellordavid @natgeo @thephotosociety and @everydayextinction #davidattenborough #blackrhino #northernkenya #conserving #conservation #withbutterfliesandwarriors #northernkenya #fightingextinction

Loijipu & me. Part 2
.
.
I’ve been featuring a certain little black rhino recently - and this week it happened. He’s been re-introduced to Sera Conservancy, the area where he was born at the beginning of last year. Loijipu is home.
.
.
Provided with amazing care, love and nurturing through the last 16 months at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), this little rhino, abandoned by his mother, thrived. Reteti, based in Northern Kenya and staffed by the local Samburu people, is the first community owned and run Elephant Sanctuary in Africa. And they did a wonderful job raising Loijipu, who I had the joy of visiting with 3 times - once when he was 3 months old and twice again a little earlier this year.
.
.
Long, healthy and happy life, Loijipu. The possibility of seeing you in the wild might be enough to tempt me back out for another rhino tracking session the next time I’m back 💞🦏💞 .

Repost from @r.e.s.c.u.e
・・・
The Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) is the story about how warriors who once feared elephants have become their protectors. All men working at Reteti were at some point warriors or are currently warriors, It’s a tribal rite of passage that every young man becomes a warrior.

What’s happening here at Reteti, without fanfare, is nothing less than the beginnings of a transformation in the way Samburus relate to wild animals they have long feared. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is as much about the people as it is about elephants.
You can be a part of Reteti and join us in protecting wildlife. You might even win a trip to see us. For $10 contribution in support of Reteti, you will be entered for a chance to win a trip here, another trip to see Dave Matthews in concert and take home a @rockbridgeguitar that features a custom inlay of an elephant hand-drawn by Dave and receive a @nikonusa D7500 18-300mm VR Lens Kit with @prizeo (Link in profile).
