Alright. Finally, officially finished my series last night. Quick background my father died 2yrs back, and this series is a commentary on my process going through it and it’s also a commentary on how everyone grieves differently and how that’s okay because we all experience it differently, different ages, relationship, experience with death prior etc etc.
This series is all the same medium. Birch plywood. Painted with acrylic. Then I’ve done woodburning, etching, loose graphics and text has been added via color blender as well, and the text is the eulogy I wrote for his funeral.
The woodburning is typically a personal connection to the situation. And the loose graphic drawings are pop culture references concerning death, with the etching marks being emotional reaction to a song
Anywho this is Good Grief I: Denial. My first stage as is most peoples typically (but not always! There is no specific order!) in the woodburning I have my family’s desk pictures because whenever I came home, that is where I’d find my father sitting if he wasn’t outside doing farm stuff, and even after the hospital stuff and the funeral etc, there was quite a while where I’d just expect to see him there sitting at the desk. Then I have Notorious BIG pictured. From the song Runnin there’s an interview with him concerning Tupac’s death and he says “he either getting shot, or shot at, he’s gonna pull through this one again and make another record and it’ll be over...” (or something along those lines) and I felt that way with being pretty much being told dad was nearly brain dead, then the etching is an emotional reaction to that song .
