Nuyorican. A portmanteau of New York and Puerto Rican. Also: the type of Spanish spoken by New Yorkers of Puerto Rican descent. Also: an art movement with roots in the Lower East Side, Spanish Harlem, South Bronx and Williamsburg, a way of expressing and processing life as a marginalized community.
ALSO: the name of the poets café we went to on our Friday night in NYC. It was the highlight of our trip for me; the poetry was unrivalled, the music had me dancing and singing, and I met some really cool people.
It’s the side of New York I really wanted to see.

If you go, I would spring for the VIP tix and STILL get there early. We were there 1.5 hours before the poetry slam started and got a couple of the remaining chairs. But, by all means, GO! I can’t recommend it enough for a fun, authentic, artist experience.
