#OnThisDay in 1513, Vasco Nuñez de Balboa became the first European to lay eyes on what is now known as the Pacific Ocean. He set out on an expedition on September 1. He had requested additional men to accompany him but that request was denied. He traveled with 190 men, a few guides and a pack of dogs. A harsh battle left many of his men wounded, so Balboa continued with a smaller group. He was told by his guides that he would be able to see the large sea if he climbed the mountain along the Chucunaque River. He named the water #MarDelSur, or South Sea. It was later renamed #MarPacifico, or "peaceful sea" by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Balboa stepped into the ocean, raising his sword, claiming the sea and surrounding lands for Spain.
