173/365 - STILL KICKIN’ (San Francisco, CA - 7/12/2015): Today, the famous Castro Theatre turns 96 years old. The National landmark opened its doors in 1922, and is one of the few movie palaces in the country from that decade that is still in operation. I admit I knew nothing about the Castro when I laid eyes upon it, but it seemed important enough to snap a photo as we walked by. It turns out I was right! Happy Birthday, Castro, and Happy Birthday, Leilani! 😉 @soccer_princess0622 #travelphotography #travel #sanfrancisco #thecastro #castrotheater #uslandmarks #roaring20s #americanhistory #moviepalace #movietheater #cityphotography #westcoast #california #outdoors #vacation #getaway #classicarchitecture #oldcinema #movies #films #marquee

Born Judith Tuvim, Judy changed her name by using the Hebrew translation of her last name. Tuvim means holiday. Judy made a successful Broadway debut in Kiss Them for Me (1945). She was then cast as a last-minute replacement for ailing star Jean Arthur in Garson Kanin’s Broadway play Born Yesterday. Judy memorized the difficult role of dim-witted Billy Dawn in three days. The play was a huge hit, running on Broadway from February 1946 to December 1949, and Judy's portrayal of the New York chorus girl who outsmarts a crooked tycoon earned particular praise. Nevertheless, Harry Cohn, the head of Columbia Pictures, was reluctant to star the actress in his film version of the play. Kanin, Katharine Hepburn, and director George Cukor rallied round Judy in an attempt to come to her aid. The three of them worked to showcase Judy's comic talent in a hilarious scene-stealing supporting part in their hit film Adam’s Rib (1949). Judy's hilarious performance as a wide-eyed bumbler on trial for shooting her unfaithful husband helped convince Cohn to sign her for Born Yesterday (1950). The competition for the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role that year was really tough. Judy was up against Bette Davis for All About Eve, Anne Baxter for All About Eve and Gloria Swanson for Sunset Boulevard. The fact that Judy received the Academy Award is quite the testament to her performance. Judy went on to make a handful of delightful film comedies, including The Marrying Kind (1952), The Solid Gold Cadillac (1956), and Full of Life (1956). She and Jack Lemmon formed a memorable comic partnership in Lemmon’s FIRST two films, It Should Happen to You (1954) and Phffft! (1954). Judy returned to Broadway in November 1956 and appeared as the female lead Bells Are Ringing, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. In her last film, Judy re-created that stage role in Bells Are Ringing (1960). She starred in two more Broadway shows, Laurette (1960) and Hot Spot (1963), before passing away at the age of 43 due to breast cancer.
