Another visit back in time to the early summer of #1983 to the #OremCityDays parade featuring none other than then #BYUfootball head coach #LaVellEdwards as the #GrandMarshall. #UteFans will get some fun laughs seeing #CoachEdwards riding around his home town (Edwards graduated from Lincoln High in 1948) in a red car! I look back at the past of #BYU, but now look deeper into the future. If #BYUathletics is to retain its branding value & following as well as be the school it can further evolve into, I’m now suspecting the #LDSChurch will spin the university off (however retaining control of Rexburg & Laie) & convert it into an “Independent Mormon” university & governed much the way @svuedu is operated.
By the early-mid 20’s the LDS Church will face a demographical warp amongst its North American membership with regards to the numbers of college age young single adults. There will not be the numbers & competitiveness to support an undergraduate university of this size & scope. This would be with precedent since back in 1935 the Mormon Church handed over Weber State, Snow College & Dixie College to the #StateOfUtah & more recently during the 1970’s spun off its chain of hospitals that became part of the private non-profit @intermountain Healthcare.
By doing this the church then will free the university to become more of a #postgraduate destination in its core mission & not being directly governed by church general authorities can align itself with leagues like the #Pac12 ...as well as the church being able to free up some annual financial resources to use elsewhere in the world where it has a growing membership. If anything the #SVUedu model shows the #LatterDaySaint culture can be retained by independent governance.
