I'd been meaning to catch up on #StanGrant 's recent oratory, so when I saw this in #Kmart of all places, I added it to the pile of Australian kids books I was collecting for the next round of birthdays of my friends' children. It's funny - sad funny, not hilarious funny - how few Australian books I connected with growing up, and even now as an adult. They always seemed to be about outback adventures, big families, or sun, sand and surf; none of which were part of my childhood. In fact one of the big joys in my recent reading of #PeopleOfTheBook was the strong connection I felt with the Australian woman at its heart. I never cared that those other Australian experiences were nothing like my own, I just stopped reading them - but I care about this one. This is an Australian book that brings to life the public policy, the cultural studies and the political correctness that have been drilled into me for decades, but always existing outside my own lived experience. Usually I get frustrated with authors who spend chapters on problems and no time on solutions, but Grant makes it so clear in #TalkingToMyCountry that the biggest problem starts with the rest of Australia simply not listening. We tell their stories for them and we try to fix their problems for them, and we tell ourselves that we're helping. We're trying so hard to fix what happened 200 years ago that we're making all the same mistakes again. This book frustrated me in many literary ways (unfinished and unconnected anecdotes; character confusion; non-linear structure; a LOT of assumed knowledge about Grant himself), but in this case, despite his CNN training, it's clear Grant is following storytelling instincts born of a non-western culture. His structure actually reminds me of books translated from languages that have richer spoken tradition rather than written. Either way, this book is so much more than a piece of literature. His fear, his frustration, his fatherhood and his forebears all loom large and incandescent. Perhaps a passage from this book would have been a better choice than the recent #MangoFiasco . #StanGrant #Kamilaroi #Wiradjuri #TalkingToMyCountry #StopFixingStartListening

Friendly advice from our movers: 'you should sell your books, you're not going to read them again, are you?!?'
I guess he hasn't realised that we are the #peopleofthebook 😂
PS. I guess it's real now... Missing all our Canadian friends! 💞

Met one of my favorite Jewish authors, Maggie Anton tonight. Super cool and got a bunch of books signed. Was the youngest by far and was being teased about if I was old enough for a Sex and Talmud discussion. Lol. But it was a great talk and I really enjoyed it. #Jewish #JewishChicago #MaggieAnton #JewishBooks #JudaismAndSex #Talmud #Chicago #Peopleofthebook #JewishEducation #AnsheEmet #OlderThanILook #FunTimes #ILoveChicago
