❗️Back Pain❗️Lifting from the ground is an essential daily task that gets taken for granted, UNLESS you are experiencing or rehabbing from a back injury.

All of a sudden the ground looks far away and a 10lb object looks like 100lbs.

Rehabbing back issues should include all of the traditional “core stability” table exercises:
Supine, Sidelying, Prone & Quadruped.

As well as some kneeling/standing Pallof pressing & anti-rotational variations.

Here is the 3rd phase of rehab, which is training safe spinal positioning for pulling objects from the floor.

The key is to flex or hinge from the hip while keeping the spine and head in a straight line or neutral position, (or whatever your natural spine posture is) maintaining it through the motion and then with load.

Great hip opener.
This stretch is essential for improving running efficiency. If this muscle is tight mostly likely your gait or stride when running or walking will be altered. This could lead to runner’s knee or lower back pain. - if you have knee pain be careful with alignment as demonstrated in video. To decrease the torque on the knee due to tighter hips, drop your foot further under your thigh. To increase torque and stretch hip bring your foot closer to your opposite hand. -hold stretch for minimum of 30 seconds and up to 2 minutes. - for deeper stretch fold torso forward over leg. - make sure you breathe to improve circulation to area of stretch - having a partner is essential to check your form as well (Lukas).

KNEES CAVING IN DURING LUNGES??

What’s up Achievers?! here today talking about lunges! One of the most common mistakes we see during lunges is the front knee caving inward. And sometimes just cueing, “push your knee out” doesn’t really do the trick! So we have a little drill for you today that we really love!

When a verbal cue isn’t quite doing the trick, it’s a good idea to try an environmental cue instead! Placing a band around the knee that is caving in so that it’s pulling the knee further into the “poor” pattern will provide physical feedback to cue the individual to push their knee out against the band. This principal is called “RNT” or “reactive neuromuscular training” which is a concept we originally learned from @functionalmvmt!

I’m currently 31 weeks pregnant and having such an easy pregnancy so far.  This is most likely attributed to my lifestyle and eating habits. I continue to train at the gym and eat a healthy balanced diet.  Along with this, I’m also getting chiropractic adjustments, rock-tape, and keep the lumbopelvic region moving with certain exercises, demonstrated in this video.  Stay tuned for some more exercises in Part 2.

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretch for tight hamstrings.
Tight hamstring muscles are common with most people and most of the time won’t cause a problem. However whilst they are tight they may be more prone to strain or contribute to other problems such as lower back pain.
Tight hamstrings are also likely to decrease your athletic performance and range of movement. When performing this stretch ensure you have a slight bend in the knee, come back to where you first feel the stretch and hold for 15-20 seconds. Following this, push your leg against the resistance band with 30-40% of your strength for 6 seconds. Take a breath in, breath out and bring the stretch back further. Repeat 3 times and then rest.

A little instrument-assisted soft tissue work this morning, just to show what the process looks like for anyone who might be intimidated by the purple ‘bruises’ and aggressive scraping we’ve seen before.

My goal here is to scan the area and find areas of tension. Then calm the tissue by introducing light strokes with the beveled tool. My tool of choice here is the HG PRO from @hawkgrips.
.
.
After using with the tool, I can drop in with my hands or elbows and work adhesions more directly with traditional trigger point massage since a lot of tension is already gone.
.
.
It doesn’t have to hurt to work so if you were feeling nervous, just know that there are gentle practitioners out there and you are in charge of the intensity of your own session, always!!! Speak up if you’re uncomfortably uncomfortable (some discomfort is ok and totes normal).

Managed to bench a post-surgery PR, but might need to invest in shirts to cover the gut. 😂 Here's 325x2 after 315x2, 295x2, 265x3. Finished up with 225x10x3. Went on to induce a heart attack with 2000 meters on the rower in 10.5 minutes, up from 1700 last time.

Wedding (+quite possibly every other life event tip) ever: heels are truly not worth it haha. I’d rather be short and comfortable, which is exactly what I was last night in @charterclub ”dressy” (sparkly) striped sandals. The trade off is 100% worth it when your day starts at 7 am and lasts until a 2 am after party 😝. My feet are thankin’ me today, and I’m so glad I didn’t suffer through walking in heels and changing my gait pattern to look “pretty”. That’s not an authentic definition of beauty, and I wouldn’t want that anyway!

Episode 677: Should Youth Athletes Specialize in a Sport?

Safe sporting participation in children is vital in keeping the youth active. Statistics show that only 30% of the youth in America get the recommended dose of physical activity (according to the CDC, 2016). This is a PROBLEM❗️
.
Youth athletes between the ages of 8-14 who participated in more than 1 sport or activity demonstrated greater neuromuscular control than peers only participating in only 1 sport. These findings support prior recommendations to discourage sport specialization in these youth athletes. Children who have improved neuromuscular control at a young age may have a reduced risk of musculoskeletal injuries.

The problem with specializing in a sport early is high risk of burnout, social isolation, overdependence, and increased risk for injury. Children should NOT specialize before adolescence for BOTH psychosocial and physical reasons.

Understanding the impact of sport specialization and sport sampling on neuromuscular control and injury risk will optimize prevention efforts through enhanced, informed sport participation recommendations and promote long term physical activity.
.
Based on the literature regarding the effect of sport specialization on injury history, it is hypothesized that youth athletes who participated in more than 1 sport during the previous year, and throughout their life, would demonstrate fewer landing errors or better neuromuscular control than those who participated in only 1 sport.

Shown are various methods of altering butt/quad ratio engagement with a squat depending on which muscles you wish to target more.

From most butt and hamstring activation to quad activation.
1️⃣ high bar back squat
2️⃣ low back back squat
3️⃣ front squat
4️⃣ over head squat

Basically, the difference in the squat is the amount of hip and knee movement, by altering the position of the bar in respect to the position of the body against gravity, the body must move in a way to remain balanced. This leads to varying degrees of hip and knee angles leading to a change in muscular engagement. In a nutshell, the more hip angle/hip hinge there is, the more butt and hamstring activation. The more the knee has to translate/move forward to maintain balance, the more quad activation there is.

Double header special 1/2 “Correct ab wheel roll outs”

Excellent exercise to recruit rectus abdominus activity AKA “6 pack”. It is also a great exercise to improve on core athleticism as well as shoulder stability! BUT there is way too many times that this god of an exercise is performed improperly leading to lack of activation of correct muscles, no mind muscle connection, and/or leading lower back injury. If you find yourselves in this boat, try to make the exercise easier and progress using the wheel if need be. For example, using an exercise ball.

Few dont’s
❌ wheeling the wheel too close to your knees - switches off core muscles

❌ hyperextending the neck leading to over-arching the back - stress on lower back joints and muscles

❌ no butt activation and/or lack of bracing awareness leading to over-arching the lower back

❌ not stabilising through the shoulders via protraction/pushing the wheel away from you

Few do’s (other than the reverse of the ❌)
✅ tuck pelvis in and tighten the butt muscles before wheeling out 🙌🏽
✅ maintain a neutral spine, tuck chin in and think about flexing the trunk to engage the abs
🙌🏽
✅ control range of movement throughout, this exercise should not be felt through the lower back
🙌🏽
