Yin Yoga Sequence for Period Pain
The problem is that we have been led to believe period pain, cramps, PMS are all just a part of our periods. That they are normal. While the truth is they are the first indicator that everything is not right with our bodies. Your Period is not meant to be painful, it is meant to be a time for introspection, self care, slowing down, but not because you are crying in pain.
Pain is generally caused because of hormonal imbalance. According to Ayurveda it is because of Dosha imbalances. According to TCM it's because of imbalance along the liver meridian. Liver in TCM is called the woman's organ and is responsible for smooth flow of qi. Stagnation of qi often results in painful periods. Remember I am talking here about primary dysmenorrhea and not secondary dysmenorrhea which involves conditions like endometriosis, etc. There is so much to talk about it, I should just start a blog
This sequence targets the liver meridian to provide some relief from menstrual pain both in short term and long term.
1) Pranayama + Meditation - 5min
2) Butterfly Pose - 5min
3) Reclined Butterfly -5min
4) Child Pose -5min
5) Saddle Pose -5min
6) Supported Bridge - 5min
7) Sphinx -5min
8) Dragonfly on Right side - 3min
9) Dragonfly on Left -3min
10) Dragonfly in Centre -3min
11) Side Shoelace - 3min each side
12) Cat Pulling Its Tail -3min each side
13) Legs Up The Wall (with deep abdominal breathing) - 5min
Use blocks , bolsters and pillows as much as you need and wherever you need. The idea is not to go as deep into the pose as you can but to relax into the posture and breathe comfortably. Everytime you come out of a posture, do it slowly, giving your body space and time to gently prepare for the shift. If the indicated timings feel too intense, adjust according to yourself.
