I often talk about how much benefit I receive from self massage, especially when I use a trigger point release tool. Here is a small peek into how I use it when I am struggling with headaches, migraines or other general pain. Keep in mind this video is sped up a lot, and I like to really take my time when doing this, especially when I find a particularly tender spot. Neck Tension Release Practice: start by closing all of your fingers together to make a paddle shape with your hands. 👋🏼 Then turn your head to the side so the SCM (sternocleidomastoid) sticks forward. Press firm fingertips into the top of the muscle behind the ear 👂 and as you turn your head slowly to the side, slide your hands down to the collarbone. .

Reset your hands and turn your head to side one again, and repeat five or six times on each side of the neck. Take your time with it and let it feel good! ✨

I see everyone starting to use these massage guns. I normally use a foam roller, softball, and lacrosse balls, and barbells. I Will admit though, this machine gets the work done in a fraction of the time and with less discomfort from traditional release and inhibition techniques. However, I feel it’s tougher to reach spots behind your back. In this case it depends on the model you are using(some may allow you better access to hit parts on the back of your body), or you may have to get a friend to help you.
I think these massage guns are great, but for overall full-body relief and restoration, traditional foam rolling, softball, barbells, and lacrosse balls are the still the way to go. Especially if you have to hit areas behind you.
With that being said, this is still very, very, Very good for beginners who know little to nothing, about self- mayo facial release and corrective exercises, or message therapy, etc, because you get a lot of release/relief from your muscles without going through a lot the pain associated with restorative practice; SMR, stretching, message. Just be careful. You should know a little about anatomy and the muscles you’re trying to recover. Don’t just go shooting yourself everywhere; bones, eyes, teeth, private parts.

I’m making myself some Brahmi + Rose massage oil to carry me through the rest of this pregnancy! ➡️Hang from something... Stair banister, top of a doorway, side of a doorway if you aren't tall enough for the top 😉

Keep a sense of connection from your arm to shoulder to torso, so it's active not passive! Imagine a dense elastic band, strong but responsive, wrapping your shoulder joint and connecting to your lats. ➡️ Lat pulls, arm circles and alternating pulls. Don't have a reformer? Loop a stretch band around a table leg!

Find your angle of scaption, where your shoulder blades are stable on your ribs and your arms follow along the same line. Work from there and focus on the contribution of your lats to the pulling action. ➡️ Roll, baby, roll! Alpha ball (or other large-ish fairly solid ball) across your upper ribs, behind your shoulder joint, across your traps, over your pecs and along your sternum. Repeat on the other side! ➡️Do the arm set again and see if it feels different or if your range is bigger! ➡️ Rhomboid arcs. Still haven't got a reformer in the last 2 minutes? Loop your stretchy band around something higher. You might have to stand instead of kneel.

Keep your arms at a height that doesn't aggravate your traps or your neck. Initiate the movement from the backs of your shoulder joints, then slide your shoulder blades together to work through your rhomboids without hiking your shoulders. You might like to turn your head from side to side as you go, in case your neck is bugging you. ➡️Give yourself a hug, widen out your back and do a little roll around.

Finding ways to come up for air... when i’m in discomfort, for me it is all about the little things. Moments and experiences I can look forward to, offering relief from harder more painful periods. Cuddles from the dogs, eating some of my favourite foods and particular bodywork that helps to relieve pain. Taking baby steps of necessary. . . .
How can I make the next 5,10,30 minutes more bearable. . . .
The allowance of this... the expansion and contraction of energy feels more natural and sustainable. It also helps my system to continually move forwards. . . .
Ensuring I am not disconnecting but able to stay present in a moment. . . .

Day 2 of my personal challenge to push myself despite my calf swelling. Today was the first time I exercised at the gym in the morning at 6:30 am. I am proud of myself and now I keep asking myself why I didn’t try morning workouts before? It was great!!!! Felt amazing and energizing! I think this is my new routine along with a long walk after work. Sounds promising!

While I was at the gym I researched lymphatic massage. I am going to start doing self-massage every day and see if it helps my calf and body. It’s possible my lymph glands are not doing their job properly these days. I have heard that this kind of self-massage can make a huge difference in water retention. Crossing my fingers! At this point anything natural is worth a try. If all else fails I will likely resort to meds...just hoping I won’t have to in order to be comfortable in my own skin once again! I used to take water pills and although they do wonders, it’s not safe to rely on them for life. .
