Penny, Dana’a foster dog is 14 years old, but you'd think she was 7. She has an incurable wiggle-butt and she's determined to makes sure everyone gives her love and attention, nudging even the most hesitant of guests by lovingly laying her head on a lap - or crawling into that lap, if it's low enough!
What makes Penny special for their family are the life lessons she teaches Dana’s young children. First, she teaches them compassion. When she first came into their home, Dana explained that sometimes being in a new place makes us feel anxious or scared, so it was their job to make sure she felt welcome and comfortable. This lesson helped Dana’s son understand his own feelings of anxiety as he entered kindergarten. She teaches them responsibility, as Dana’s daughter ensures her water bowl stays full thorough out the day, and helps Mom to feed her morning/night. Penny teaches the kids about giving back - they're too young to volunteer at a soup kitchen, but welcoming an abandoned pet teaches them that not everyone has a home, and it's their job to take care of those that need help.
She teaches all of them acceptance and restores their hard days by covering them in kisses. She makes them feel loved by joining their family as they move from room to room, and patiently waits for bath time to be over, then heads in to lay next to their story time chair to listen to bedtime stories. Penny is their fourth foster through Grand-Paws Senior Sanctuary, and if she gets adopted they’ll celebrate like they did the others, and she'll teach them the joy of finding a home for a pet in need, and they’ll open up their home to the next wonderful senior. If she doesn't, she'll stay there and they’ll love on her for the rest of her years -- a win/win either way!
