The last two photos I was able to take before my phone fritzed from the cold. Top: approximation of the 4-hr trail ahead. Bottom: the last of Shasta's sky shadow in the distant atmosphere while our guide gets ready to tie us in to make the steep climb ahead. Pick-axes, helmets, and crampons required.
It was awesome until it wasn't. Exhausting climb up, but too cold to stop and rest even for just 5 min to recover without freezing my digits off. Did I mention it was COLD?? Bottles were freezing in our packs. Electronics froze. Snacks froze. My bum was frozen. Toes were barely hanging on. Fingers were in and out of frozen numbness. Not my favorite. All I wanted was a warm nap and a cup of tea. And so it being Mother's Day and all, I took my bad self and made my wish come true. I turned around at sunrise and took some dreamy Shasta turns down to base camp. .
