The virtues of a cold shower.
A cold shower is something that was just not possible in Dubai. The underground water pipes are heated by the 40+ temperatures cast down from the blazing sun which in turn heated the water pipes. We had a hot and cold tap but the cold was hotter than the hot tap. Don't even think about getting a shower after 10am unless you wanted to take your top layer of skin off! Washing clothes was also a problem. Normally the water is heated by the washing machine but when it comes into the washing machine at 60+ degrees, it's not great for your delicates. So I used to make sure all washing was done at 6am, before it got too hot. So no relief with a cold shower when you got in from the scorching temperatures outside.
Doha was similar but in our apartment, there was a boiler for the hot water so you could use the cold water as hot and hot as cold! When in Romania, the water temperatures were back to normal UK standards but you wouldn't want a cold shower when it was - 18 outside! But yes, summer cooler showers were nice.
On Friday, it was the schools annual fun run. 700m for the littlies, 2km for Yr3-Yr6 and 5km for everyone else. Now I'm definitely not a runner! So I opted for the water station. I must say, watching the London Marathon in the past paid off. You'd think I was a professional 😁 but my God it was humid! All respect to the runners. My son came 5th in his year group and I'm very proud of him 😊 Luckily it was overcast so no blazing sun but the cloud kept the humidity up. I donned my board shorts as they dry quickly. By the end of the hour and a half on the course, I was dripping and felt utterly minging! After the race was normal lessons but luckily I have frees so tried to dry out as much as possible and changed into my trousers. Damp bras are not nice though 😩
When I got home, I finally had chance to hit the shower. Here, the cold water is warmed slightly by the sun, but just enough so it's not cold but vaguely warmish and the perfect cool temperature for the best cold shower I've ever had! #coldshower #sweatyhair #funrun #expatproblems #expatlife
