Often alone in a crowd,
I sit and stare at the people around.
Sometimes, to get to know them,
The other times for my amusement.
Filtering the fake laughter at a bar,
One day, somewhere I hear a guitar.
My eyes ponder here and there,
To find the guitarist seated
With his guitar, a mike, on a wooden chair,
Under lights dim and faded.
He sings Frank Sinatra's classics,
In his unique local accent.
His eyes, unlike his old clothes,
Glitter with true happiness.
I wonder about his family,
Maybe he has a small daughter,
Waiting for daddy to come home each night
And play some melody to lull her.
It must be tough paying rent,
But this moment cannot be missed.
The strings and his fingers are in love,
The music created is just a bliss.
My thoughts are broken by a wave,
A handsome guy smiles at me,
Do you need anything else mam?
The well dressed waiter asks dutifully
His clothes are ironed,
His hair are matte and combed.
Nails trimmed, a well paid man,
But his watch ticks in another time zone.
I smile back and say no, he turns around,
Stands in a corner, his thoughts, far away,
His fingers dance in the air as he,
Loses himself listening to the guitarist play.
Maybe he was in a band too,
Wooed his wife with his songs.
And now his son and daughter wait,
Each night, for daddy to come along.
Late shifts for extra pay,
In a job from eleven am to ten pm,
To live a stress free life with,
Bills paid before the month end.
I stare at both of them for a moment,
Finish my drink and walk back home.
Wondering about their lives and
On which path should I go.
Both were happy in their own ways,
Both of them had misery.
One lived for his passion, while,
The other, for his responsibilities.
They had something the other did not,
Will power wasn't the thing that lacked.
Both of them, were living a life,
With some things, happy and some sad.
What if I made them switch
Their lives for a couple of days
Would they like it or would they go back,
To the choices they'd already made.
This piece, although a year old, has been very close to my heart.
