During news droughts where there’s not much to post about, I’ll be posting some debates here and there. For debate #1, do you think Patrick Corbin will be a top 5 Cy Young candidate when it’s all said and done? My answer is no. His average BABIP in the last three years is .325, compared to .214 in 2018. He also accumulated an average FIP of 4.09 over that time span, and his .194 this season suggests there will be regression sooner or later. However, his scorching start hasn’t been all thanks to luck. Corbin has made changes in his pitch usage. He’s made hitters look silly with his slider, which he’s been pitching much more often ahead in the count, to left handed batters in particular. I hope he proves me wrong and continues to serge as an ace for the D-Backs, but with underlying statistics not on his side, as well as the NL’s stacked starting pitching position, I do not think he will finish top 5. What do you think?
