I am not allowed to breastfeed my child during work. It’s my owner’s kindness that he atleast allowed me to keep my baby near my feet, under my work table. When my son get hungry, I go under the table and feed him secretly. I left my husband a year ago. Everyone said it’s my shame. I didn’t feel any shame to leave home where I had been beaten every day. But now, at the age of 15, with my fourteen month old son I don’t know what to do. My family shut the door on my face. My husband never come to see if we are alive or not. It’s easy for a man to forget his child, not for a mother, my son become my life. I have managed to earn, rented a shelter and wanted to go back to school. When I went to my school, I was not allowed to get inside. Our teacher said he can’t allow me to enter inside class with a child..married girls are not allowed to attend classes with children. May be he forget my age, may be he forget two years ago I was his favourite student. I stopped trying to study. Nothing worry me anymore. I am only concern of those ants that bite my son the entire time I work. - Papiya (15), in the picture her son Pinu •

Girls in Azerbaijan like to marry young. Especially outside the city a girl is almost seen as an old maid at 20 years old.

According to UNICEF 11% of girls in Azerbaijan marry before they are 18. .

I gave birth a day ago. He is my seventh child. I didn’t want to have another child. But having children never was a woman’s decision. I am a grandmother too. My first daughter was born when I was twelve...all home remedies for miscarriage failed. I work in the field. I have to go back to work within a few days. Staying home with a new born means starvation. There is little rice at home, we kept this only for the youngest one. Rest of us will stay hungry. In our island we do not have access to healthcare. Especially we feel shame to talk about birth control. Men do not understand what we go through during each child’s delivery. Husband do not want his wife to take any initiative..I thought I would die any moment during this delivery. There was no help. It’s been three days my husband went for fishing. He will bring food. My children didn’t ask once for their father, all they want to know when I will cook for them. - Ratna (30) with her one day old son

At 13, I gave birth. But I couldn’t become mother. I found it impossible to accept and love my child. Although only because of her I came out from an abusive marriage. Uncountable days, I passed with little foods or almost no food. It was frustrating to watch my parent’s fight over food. Leaving my a year old daughter to my Grandmother and going to the Saudi Arabia was a brave choice for a village girl like me who never see even a town before. In Saudi, my employer’s torture kept my past wound raw. They didn’t give me time to breathe. As a maid I worked like a slave, I couldn’t eat their food. It was okay, l have already learned the tactics of surviving hunger. Money was the only thing I desired. Knowing satisfyingly that my daughter is getting things at home was my only luxury. Two years, I spent in a country about which I still know nothing. The family I was living with never took me outside, their cctv camera kept record of my each toilet trip visit, every move was accountable. But money was my drive. There was nothing I could do in village. The village girls who were working at textile in the city, always returned to village with illness, without any savings. Atleast I earned and saved money...After serving two years in Saudi, during my return trip to Bangladesh, I was sitting in the airport, exhausted and hungry. There was money in my hand bag, but I didn’t purchase a bowl of rice. I saved it all for my daughter...my daughter whom I find very hard to love and care! May be one day, I will be healed, may be some day I will no more find it difficult to laugh and love, that day I will stop seeing my terrible past on my daughter’s face. That day will surely come. - Ruma (17) •

Photo by Stephanie Sinclair @stephsinclairpix // A teenage girl is married in Baghdad, Iraq in 2003. Conflict and disasters exacerbate the poverty, gender inequality and lack of education that cause child marriage to happen in the first place. For instance, before the US invasion, 15 percent of Iraqi women wed before 18, according to Iraqi government statistics. However, according to Girls Not Brides, Iraq’s child marriage figure jumped to 24 percent by 2016, including nearly 5 percent who married before age 15.

To make matters worse, last November lawmakers favored a measure to allow each of the country’s religious groups to set their own legal age for a girl to wed. For the majority Shiite sect of Iraqi Muslims, that age could be as young as 9. Thankfully, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi blocked a final vote needed to enact the law. But there’s the widespread expectation that Shiite Muslim religious politicians will reintroduce the bill when parliament reconvenes this autumn. While local advocates work on these issues, we need to support initiatives supporting girls in conflict and humanitarian settings, like @tooyoungtowed and others. #endchildmarriage #iraq #conflict #tooyoungtowed #girlseducation

Hadeel Salem, 17, is putting her hijab at home before going outside and walking to the training. Sadr City is one of the few places in Baghdad in which every woman wears an abaya (full body veil) in the streets. Yet, the team members don’t: Hadeel and her sister Huda go out with jeans and a long shirt. “We don’t really care” what people might or not say in the neighborhood. The team counts nine members — all girls from Sadr City. Two teenage boys sometimes join them for the traning. While men and women have limited interactions in conservative parts of Iraq, the team members don’t really mind if men or boys are present — they are perhaps too focused to pay attention. Delaware and New Jersey are the only states that ban child marriage by raising the minimum marriage age to 18 without exception. Great momentum in 2018 and let’s hope other states do the same!
