This is a lovely textural wine. The fruit component displays spiced pink lady apple and rose petal influences, there's a touch of musk with a creamy texture and the finish has nice length as well. #edenvalley #southaustralia

Chaffey Brothers are relatively new kids on the block, being established in 2012. Winemaker Daniel Chaffey Hartwig and his brother in-law Theo Engela got together and Chaffey Bros was born. They're whole approach to winemaking is based around minimal intervention and they don't use any fining agents and that means no possible animal residue, which also makes their wines vegan friendly
🍷
The Triplepunkt is a wine blended from 3 individual old vine vineyards in the Eden Valley at Springton, Flaxman Valley and Angaston Hills.
🍷
The Eden Valley shares its western border with its more famous neighbour the Barossa Valley. It's often referred as a sub region of the Barossa Zone, but the two locations are quite different from each other. Elevation is the primary difference. The Barossa Valley has an average elevation of around 270m and fertile soils are spread throughout the valley plus consistently warm temperatures at both day and night time. By contrast, the Eden Valley has an elevation around 400-500m with daytime temperatures 2-3 degrees cooler and 5-7 degrees cooler at night. These conditions mean that ripening periods in Eden valley are longer, with vintage being 2-3 weeks after that of the Barossa Valley. The cooler conditions allow for greater natural acid retention, making the Eden Valley one of Australias premier regions for producing quality Riesling.

In case anyone is wondering about the #rating that I use, here’s a little clarification . 🍷
#fantasticwine =5/5,
#excellentwine =4.5/5
#verygoodwine = 4/5
#goodwine 3.5/5
#prettygoodwine =3/5
#averagewine = 2.5/5
#notagoodwine = less than 2.5/5
🍷
I don’t believe that rating wines can be as definitive as giving a score out of 100.
🍷
My preference is to rate the wine with a #word, to indicate my thoughts on its quality. Its meant as a guide to you, the reader, in case you wish to seek the wine out and try it for yourself
🍷
I don't get paid for any posts and the wines I've tasted are a combination of being self funded, shared with friends, samples or tasted at trade events.

📍2016 #Jimbarry #lodgehill #shiraz #verygoodwine #mediumtofullbodied #redwine this wine has a nice rounded entry showing red plums and black forrest berries, eucalyptus and white pepper. There's subtle spicy oak which is the hallmark of a mid palate of restrained intensity, leading to firm and fresh, dry tannins giving us a well balanced, versatile food friendly wine. #clarevalley #southaustralia

🍷
Jim Barry purchased the lodge hill vineyard in 1977 and it's located along the eastern ranges of the Clare township. At an altitude of 480m it's one of the highest in The Valley. Jim's original intention was to devote the whole vineyard to Riesling, however he discovered a different soil profile on the northern side of the property which was also a warmer section, so he decided that this section was actually more suited to Shiraz. This resulted in two varieties on the vineyard
🍷
The Shiraz vineyard soil consists of 40-50 centimetres of rich, chocolate loam over sheets of rock, while the Riesling section of the vineyard is brown loam over a layer of clay over slate bedrock

O'Leary walker wines was established in 2000 by winemakers David O'Leary and Nick Walker. Two friends that took charge of their own destinies after successful careers with larger wine companies in South Australia.
🍷
Gruner Veltliner in Australia is really only a new venture in this country, but it's making a name for itself very quickly. When you think about it, it's really not a surprise that more and more Australians are discovering this variety and loving it. The refreshing, zesty qualities of GV are a perfect match with balmy Australian summer days and outdoor dining.
🍷The first Producers of Gruner Veltliner in South Australia was a winery called Hahndorf Hill. This was only in 2009 and since then the number of growers has grown significantly in the South Australia, mainly through the work of Handorf Hill, who brought the variety from Austria and shared their cuttings with other growers.

🍷
This Tasmanian Pinot Noir comes from the NE coast of the state in a sub region known as Pipers River. This small family owned vineyard is 3ha in total, with the oldest block being planted in 1988. This wine has been called Nero, due to the owners Annette and Ed Ferrero heritage and is made up of 4 Pinot clones D5V12a, G5V15, 0013 and 0014 which were all developed in the 1960s with a primary purpose of producing sparkling wine, but has a proven history of producing high quality table wines on this site.
🍷
In 2014 they planted a hectare of new vines with 2 more additional Pinot clones in 115 and Abel and interestingly also another variety called Lagrein, which is native to the Northern Italian alpine region, Alto Adige. That will be an interesting wine, and as far as I know it will be Tasmania's only Lagrein and I look forward to its release.

#lenckdrankredwine #lenckdrankgerman
🍷
this wine has generosity of flavour marked all over it, which is something that I haven't encountered before in a German wine. It's a blend of Cabernet Cubin, Merlot, Syrah and Dornfelder. 🍷
Cabernet Cubin is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Blaufrankish, developed in the 1970. It has similar characteristics to Cab sauv with a dark fruit spectrum and high tannins, but it has good resistance to cold and more suitable to areas proned to snowy winters.
🍷
Rolf Willy was my last winery visit on a European Holiday that exposed me to a bunch of varieties from countries that you don't see in Australia and this was another most enjoyable wine of interest. Rolf Willy is a second generation family business and winemaker Jurgen Rolf was very generous in his time for tasting an extensive range of wines, ranging from Sauv Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Trolinger, Lemberger plus many more. They are investing heavily in French Oak as this wine is testament , but they are also using it in their top range Pinot Noirs and Riesling as well.
🍷
Currently they have 225 ha of vines and the winery is of considerable size. Two of Jurgens Children are also undertaking studies to enter the family business in the future. This has given Jurgen a new lease on life and he is building a brand new state of the art winery with increased fruit sorting capabilities and a barrel room, with a future focus on producing premium quality and single vineyard wines. I look forward to another visit in a few years time.
🍷
Württemberg is Germanys fourth largest wine region and 70% of production is red wine and best known for producing lighter style reds of Trollinger, Lemberger and Pinot Meunière, but there's a movement towards higher alcohol and more extracted wine styles in the Württemberg and Rolf Willy are at the forefront of that movement.

2015 #bedalov #zinfandel #verygoodwine #fullbodied #redwine a wine that expressed luscious plum and dark cherry fruits with loads of spices, dark chocolate and a long, dry lingering finish #dalmatiancoast #croatia
🍷
#lenckdrankzinfandel #lenckdrankcroatian
🍷
I was a little surprised when my waiter in Split recommended a Zinfandel, The surprise to me was more that it was labelled Zinfandel, rather than the fact that it was Croatian. Indirectly Zinfandel is probably the most famous Croatian variety in the world, because this is the country of origin, except its official name is Crljenak Kaštelansk, but even in Croatia its generally called Tribidrag, which is what I was actually expecting (and been searching for). From a tourist and marketing perspective it’s pretty smart of the makers to call it a Zinfandel. It’s something that most people and especially Americans understand.
🍷
As with so many varieties I’ve come across from Croatia, they have difficult to pronounce (and hence remember) names. In Italy and specifically in Puglia ( the boot of Italy) its called Primitivo and they’ve been making it there since the 18th Century. In Croatia though it’s been there since the beginning of making wines and some of the earliest written records date back to the 15th century. 🍷

Marastina, an indigenous variety of the Dalmatia coast and its grown in abundance on the Croatian coast. It also goes under the name Rukatak in south Dalmatia and Krizol on Cres Island. But hang on, it doesn’t stop there it’s also known as Malvasia Bianca lunga in Italy and pavlos in Greece and a few others. They have all been tested genetically and proven to be the same variety. Pretty bloody confusing if you ask me, but hey this wine was delicious all the same. 🍷

Domaine Jean-Michel Stephan Cote-Rotie 2015. 93 #jeanmichelstephan #cotierotie #rhone #vin#verygoodwine #wine

This wine comes from a very interesting area in Tasmania. If you know anything much about Tasmanian Vineyards, you will know that most of them located along the coastline, all the way from the North West Coast, hugging the east coast and finishing down south. Ouse is different and doesn't fit the mould. Basically it's smack bang in the middle of the island (80km North of Hobart) with a terrain of bare, steep dolerite hillsides that were formed during the Jurassic period and have similar formations to South Africa and also Antarctica.
🍷
Temperatures in Ouse also vary to other sub regions. The average mean January temperature is one of the highest during the day and lowest at night in Tasmania at average 25.4C during the day and 10.1C at night. This compares to other regions like the Coal River Valley near Hobart in the South (22.2/12.6C), Bicheno on the East Coast (21.4/13.0) and the Tamar Valley near Launceston in the North (24.2/12.2C).
🍷
This vineyard on the Rotherwood Property started as a 1 hectare project back in 2002 and its grown considerably. It now produces fruit for some of Australias best Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sparkling Wines including Arras, Penfolds Yatarna, Eileen Hardy and Dalrymple. Not that far away is also another famous vineyard called Meadowbank that was established in 1976 and has been a premium fruit producing vineyard for famous Australian names.
🍷
The Upper Derwent Valley is hanging out for further investment and its certainly showing the goods so far. Watch this space.

2015 #foresthill #block1 #riesling #verygoodwine #dry #whitewine zesty lemon and lime fruit upfront, minerals, grapefruit, slate and a hint of violets and lavender, long, steely length. #greatsouthern #westernaustralia
🍷
#lenckdrankriesling #lenckdrankgreatsouthern
🍷
Do you like aged Riesling? If you do, then you should buy some of this and put it away in the cellar for 10 years. This has all the hallmarks of a young Riesling that will develop beautiful honeysuckle and Kerosene characteristics with careful cellaring. It has amazingly firm length and virtually no residual to speak of. It is an elegant style, however it's a little disjointed due to the exuberance of youth, but with time it will mature and integrate further, which will make for a #fantasticwine in a decade.
🍷
Forest Hill is a family owned company and it was established in the Great Southern region on the southern tip of Western Australia. This was in 1965 and it also became the first cool climate vineyard planted in the state. Incidentally, it was a couple of years later when Vasse Felix was established as the original vineyard of the Margaret River. Prior to the 1960s the wine making epicentre of WA was in the Swan Valley, which is now on the out skirts of Perth and they started making wine there back to 1840. 🍷
Block 1 is significant in that it was the first block planted in 1965 and it was Riesling. It started a trend that never stopped. The Great Southern is incredibly remote, being 360km South of Perth with diverse growing conditions due to its size of around 100km x 150km. Riesling has continued to become one of the mainstay varieties of the region and it's recognised along with the Clare Valley, Eden Valley and Tasmania as the best and most consistent Regions for producing great Riesling.

Tasmania has been gaining an international reputation over the past decade or two, as being one of the "New World" hot spots for sparkling wine production. Jansz is the original method traditional sparkling wine that was produced in Tasmania, with the first vintage in 1989 being a collaborative project with Louis Roederer of Champagne. Tasmania's climate is blessed with conditions conducive to producing elegant, high quality sparkling wines. Pinot Noir is the most planted grape, followed by Chardonnay. Whereas a lot of this is used in table wines, a fair chunk is allocated to sparkling wine production as well.
🍷
The accolades for Tasmanian sparkling keep adding up. Last year, The House of Arras, another dedicated sparkling brand like Jansz, was awarded the Best Australian Producer at the London International Wine and Spirits Competition. A first for a sparkling company and previously unthinkable.

Andrew Pirie, who is a leading Winemaker and a pioneer of the modern Tasmanian Industry, has this week been advocating a move to protect the Geographical Integrity of Tasmania, much like that of say Champagne. It so happens that an EU delegation has been in Hobart in recent days, to discuss GI's and Andrew has proposed to register Tasmania's own regional appellation scheme for sparkling, offering protection from "Pretenders" and maintain current quality standards. He is proposing to use the the term "Tasmanian Method" to protect the current Tasmanian way of doing things. He believes it would be acceptable to the EU and become recognised globally, much like "Methode Champenoise". It will be interesting to see if this gains any momentum.

2015 #ouseriver #pinotnoir #verygoodwine #mediumtofullbodied #redwine generous upfront fruit for a Pinot Noir, showing red plums and cherries with the addition of earthy characteristics, undergrowth and seasoned oak. The mid palate is solid, exhibiting cocoa, pomegranate and mushrooms as it leads to a finish of firm grainy tannins #derwentvalley #tasmania

Produttori Del Barbaresco Ovello 2013. Drukket over 2 dager og ganske åpen hele veien. 93 #produttoridelbarbaresco #ovello #barbaresco2013 #verygoodwine #livet #winelover #nebbiolo

Stafano Stefani immigrated to Australia in 1985 from Tuscany, where his Grandfather was a vineyard owner and wine collector. Stefano purchased this vineyard in 2003 at which time his friend Mario Marson was vineyard manager and winemaker, who had previously worked for two Victorian Icons in Mount Mary and Jasper Hill. 🍷
The Heathcote wine region is located in central Victoria, about 100km North of Melbourne and the area gain geographical recognition in 2002. Now a days, it consists of 60 Vineyards and most are planted in Cambrian soils, which deep and red with excellent water retention and irrigation is rarely required in Heathcote. The region is most noted for producing Shiraz and conditions are conducive to producing small concentrated grapes and the wines are known for their dark depth of colour, voluptuous dark fruit components and excellent cellaring potential.

Winemaker Alex McKay had a distinguished career at Hardys which was owned by the American juggernaut Constellation Brands, but he set up is own winery in a little town called Collector, which is situated about 60km north of Australia's Capital city, Canberra.
🍷
The fruit for this wine is sourced from a small New South Wakes region called Tumbarumba, which is situated in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains and this vineyard is at an elevation of 850m.
🍷
Fruit was picked at 12 Baume and underwent whole bunch press, before fermentation was performed in a combination of New and aged oak, of both Troncais and Allier barrels. All barrels went through full Malolactic fermentation and were aged on lees and then blended prior to bottling.

NV #Jansz #premiumcuvee #rose #verygoodwine #dry #sparklingrose elegant wild strawberries provide a subtle burst of initial fruit with a creamy, textural mouthfeel. A hint of blood orange gives the wine some added complexity and the finish is crisp and persistent #pipersriver #tasmania
