I really enjoy practicing arm balances, and after my Ashtanga practice one of the things I enjoy the most besides drop backs, is getting to play with Vrschikasana. I also believe there is a lot of emotional work we can do while practicing arm balances, though I believe that’s a possibility with pretty much everything in life. Every single challenge or obstacle in life is an opportunity to dig into emotions related to fear, aversion, attachment or egoism.
Yoga Asanas facilitate the work as they put us in a deep connection with our bodies, while bringing the movements of our minds to quietness by keeping it focused in the actions of the body. These circumstances facilitate the inner observation and study.
My point is that Asanas are tools, but they are not the whole path. When Patanjali talks about practice, he mentions only once the Asanas, the real practice is inside. The Asana is beautiful and therefore it attracts us, it provides us with many benefits, it helps us to prepare for the rest of the path, but the rest of the path is the one I believe we have to learn to walk in order to remember who we are... infinite and unlimited light! Purna.
