Sandalwood (santalum album)
One of my favourite essential oils; Sandalwood has been used for medical and therapeutic purposes for over 4,000 years. It is a relaxing and soothing oil, especially good for calming irritations, whether of the nerves, skin, urinary tract or chest. At a spiritual level, Sandalwood is the essence of being, it instils an experience of inner-unity and presence in the here and now. It is one of the more expensive essential oils, but the benefits that can be felt from this Sacred oil are something very special.
Sandalwood is aphrodisiac, anti-depressant, antispasmodic, antiseptic, bactericidal, calming, cicatrisant, expectorant, relaxing, sedative and tonic.
Some of it's benefits...
soothes dry, dehydrated, irritated, inflamed and chapped skins, useful for shaving rash, helpful for eczema and psoriasis, calms redness of broken capillaries and reduces high colouring
excellent oil for relief and treatment of respiratory conditions such as throat and chest infections, coughs (particularly dry, irritating and persistent coughs), bronchitis, sore throats and hoarseness
powerful urinary antiseptic/cleansing effect of the kidneys, helpful for cystitis and U.T.I.s
aphrodisiac- sensual and soothing
a deeply tranquil oil, Sandalwood soothes and relieves tension, stress, insomnia, anxiety and depression, quietens mental chatter, clarifies and stills the mind
aids meditation, yoga and healing work
resonates with the Base and Crown Chakras- linking the two (matter and spirit), the Sacral Chakra (sexual tonic) and the Throat Chakra (encourages self-expression) Sandalwood blends well with Rose, Neroli, Lavender, Chamomile Roman, Mandarin and Geranium.
