This is BEER REVIEW #260 for CY2017 Sim:Ama, an American Strong Pale Lager by @alvaradostreetbrewery. Rating: 4/5 - Exceptional
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it a million times over again, I’ll always keep going back to clear beer. Alvarado’s CY2017 Sim:Ama (Simcoe & Amarillo) is Round 2 of their 2017 hop crop exploration. They take the same base in Augustiner Lager yeast and 2-Row, but utilize different hops each time. Like its predecessor, Sim:Ama is billed exactly the same as the previous batch - a 6.5% ABV, 50 IBU American Strong Pale Lager. Sign me the fuck up
Sim:Ama leaves its sort-of Matrix-esque can looking all sorts of golden, straw yellow. Of course, it’s clear as day. A frothy head of bright white foam with microscopically tiny bubbles gather at the surface and cling in desperation to the side of the glass
The nose… well, it’s surprisingly solid. Fool me twice, this smells like a West Coast IPA with its balanced, but flashy, citrus vibe. I got mostly orange peel followed by toasted bread and some (surprisingly) fruity herb at the tail end. As it warms, that grainy malt shines through even harder
The fact this even sits in the medium category is sort of baffling. Lagers are supposed to be water. It’s a lot more creamy than expected and generates a whole lot of smoothness. Offsetting that is a bright, bubbly (very Lager-like) carbonation that finds a way to tickle every square inch of the mouth
This one is IPA all the way. Sure, there’s that toasted bread mid palette but it’s mostly citrus and hops and straight copies the nose. It’s orangey with flecks of some cantaloupe and honeydew melon that make way for a pleasantly bitter earthy, herbal hop bang. The finish, unlike what you’d expect from a lager, is thicker and lingers well
Solid beer? Hell yeah. As good as (one of my favorites) in Moscit? Nah, not quite!
