Only a couple more days left to see Jeff Degolier's installation '(If This is Paradise) I wish I had a Lawnmower' at the West 10th Window! Stop by 223 West 10th street this weekend to see it in action! .
In (If This is Paradise) I wish I had a Lawnmower at the West 10th Window, Jeff DeGolier installed a large photographic detail/collage of Time Landscape, an earthwork realized by Alan Sonfist in 1978 that recreates a small chunk of land in downtown Manhattan to its pre-colonial condition. Set onto a vibrating panel, the calming and hopeful image of flowers and greenery begins to blur, as though shaken by a jackhammer or rumbling traffic. Behind the vibrating photograph, DeGolier installed a small black & white CRT monitor which continuously streams an instructional video on how to grow a plant in a car. Inside the window, wires and plugs are left exposed, and DeGolier's juxtaposition of preserved natural landscape with the often aggressive modernity that now inhabits lower Manhattan is disarming, creating an anachronistic display of the dichotomy between what is commonly thought of as the natural world and humanity's tireless search for absolute comfort via machinery, electronics, and architecture.
