#Repost from #imcc5 panelist @peekaboonadiah talking about #OceansOnline #imcc5 plenary speaker @diva_amon
My #womencrushwednesday, @diva_amon: "Representation matters, never underestimate that.. (and gyms on expedition vessels are not that great)."
Dr. Diva Amon is the only deep sea biologist from the #Caribbean. A Trinidadian, she feels that it is important to communicate both the privilege and responsibility that comes with studying such an extreme habitat, especially when it is an ecosystem that is out of sight and out of mind for most people.
She's been on 15 deep sea expeditions to date - from exploring the seafloor in her own backyard around T&T, to the hydrothermal vents in the Antarctic and Marianas Trench National Monument.
She emphasises that human influence extends even to the remotest part of the planet, and that there is no such thing as a 'pristine' place anymore (think microplastics). It is a very sad realisation, but what fuels her passion is that the discoveries from the deep sea can potentially galvanise the support and action for the protection of this still poorly understood ecosystem.
She is also on a mission to make deep sea #science accessible for those in developing countries. Currently, the locals do not have the financial, technical nor technological capacity to venture into this field of study because it is just too expensive. "On all of my expeditions (apart from two or three), I was always the only person of colour, always the only woman of colour; every single time the only person from a developing country. It is pretty isolating and this needs to change."
I think she is a proper #badass, and I'm not able to feature everything that she's doing in this wee post. So do follow her account, and be prepared to be mind- by her amazing work!
Thank you, Diva, for your raw honesty. Was such a pleasure chatting with you! You are an #inspiration and a #rolemodel to so many!!!
