Sometimes I think we get so caught up in the sin itself, we forget about the person behind the sin.
This works both ways- towards others AND self.
You see, Jesus is far less concerned about the sin itself, and far MORE concerned with the sinner!
The story of the woman caught in adultery is a perfect example of this. (John 8: 1-11)
The religious leaders wanted to see Jesus condemn the woman for her sin, (and according to Mosaic law, had every right to), but you’ll notice that Jesus didn’t place His focus there.
His focus instead, was on that of forgiveness, mercy, grace, compassion and love.
Here stood a woman, caught in the very act of sin, face down in shame, scarcely clothed, naked and bare before Jesus.
But looking beyond her outward, immoral actions, Jesus got right to the heart of it all, and saw the person underneath.
He saw her for who she truly was.
A child of God. Forgiven and loved.
And so He reaches out- not with a stone, like the Pharisees expected- but with love.
Understood rather than condemned. Saved rather than stoned.
Sin exposed yet covered in His love.
Beloved, Jesus does not sit as our accuser. That’s what the enemy does.
Jesus stands in the gap, interceding on our behalf, longing that we should look beyond our sin, and receive His love.
His overwhelming, never ending, reckless- (dare I say)- scandalous, love.
For HIS love covers a multitude of sins!
