Emerging Hammerhead | Photograph by Rick Miskiv (@22degrees.co)
.
“While I was diving the Bajo Alcyone divesite at Cocos Island in Costa Rica, this hammerhead emerged from a school of jacks,” writes Your Shot photographer Rick Miskiv. “There was a massive school of jacks near a hammerhead cleaning station that suddenly swarmed the reef. They obscured my presence to the sharks. Then I saw the first hint of the hammerhead in the cloud of jacks. It was very exciting because I could tell the shark was directly approaching, and I think we were both equally surprised!”

Images by @joelsartore | For thousands of creatures living on Earth, time is running out. That’s why the National Geographic Society has partnered with the Zoological Society of London to launch the Photo Ark EDGE Fellowship. The fellowship focuses on Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species and kicks off with these five unique creatures: the Antillean manatee (photographed at the @Dallas_World_Aquarium), Baird’s tapir (photographed at @theomahazoo), the giant anteater (photographed at the Caldwell Zoo), the hawksbill turtle (photographed in Xcaret, Mexico), and the volcano rabbit (photographed at the Chapultepec Zoo). These species are the subject of conservation efforts by our first fellowship candidates in Latin America. Each species has been featured in the National Geographic Photo Ark, a flagship program of the National Geographic Society founded by National Geographic photographer @JoelSartore. Once selected, the final Photo Ark EDGE fellows will undertake a 2-year fellowship project to help protect their focal species. The fellowships will leverage the power of Sartore’s captivating portraits to bring attention to the global extinction crisis and will help put effective tools in the hands of conservationists working to turn the tide for species at risk. Learn more about these species and the people working to save them by clicking the link @joelsartore’s bio. #PhotoArk

“The more the better.” This is Angelnae Randalle’s (@angel_dancer_1) stance when it comes to practice. On average, the 14-year-old, who currently lives in Michigan, rehearses 24 to 30 hours a week — and that number only goes up when a competition or convention is on the horizon. You might be surprised to learn that Angelnae started dancing just three years ago; her grandmother signed her up for her first class and passed away shortly thereafter. “She was my biggest supporter,” says Angelnae. “I think she is very proud of me.”
See what a day in Angelnae’s life is like. It’s on our Instagram story right now.

I’ve been quiet on Instagram the last several days because I’ve been very sick. I’m in Salta, Argentina and I came down with a very bad cold when I was in Patagonia. I was caught out in the rain while hiking on a glacier. Toss in the cold temperatures and high winds and viola!……sick.

I’m attending the Adventure Travel World Summit here in Salta and when not at the event, I’ve spent almost all my time in my hotel room sleeping and trying to recover.

End result? Not a lot of activity on Instagram.

I’m feeling much better now, however. Still have a bit of a cough, but other than that, the major symptoms are gone.

I’m here in Salta for 3 more nights and then I head back to US. I’ll be home in Minneapolis for 6 days before I head to Portland, Oregon for another conference. After that I head to London for what I hope will be my last big conference of the year. If you are in Portland or London, let me know if you’d like to meet up.

Tip: If you plan to hike from Zermatt to Stellisee for sunrise do not follow the google maps🚶🏽directions!!! Prob a bad idea for any hike 😅

Hydra by night. A perfect long weekend getaway. In mid-September, the heat backs off and the water is still warm. A long trek or two gives good coverage of the island. Food is excellent, especially if fish and seafood are your thing and you don't mind feta, local cheeses, and Greek wine. Throw in an afternoon boat ride along the southwestern shore, a few dips in the Gulf of Hydra, some late afternoon strolls and a lie-in or two and you'll have the makings for a perfect shoulder/mid-season break.
