Gosh I felt like such a shrimp next to this statue! But, one thing is for certain, #Australia, I’ll be back prawnto!

Headcam view of a blacktip shark release. See how mellow she was and then how healthily she swam away? This was the perfect shark. But first, let me wipe the jellyfish out of your eye!

SCENERY: I love the isolation of this coastline. When you look around, you see wild landscapes, largely unobstructed by human influence. Just rugged, natural beauty. I really want to camp, surf and dive my way up the #westernaustralia coastline.

This female blacktip #shark (not blacktip reef shark) is my favorite shark of our trip so far. We couldn’t determine whether she was an Australian blacktip (Carcharhinus tilstoni) or a Common blacktip (Carcharhinus limbatus). She performed the most incredible spinning acrobatic leap and then was cool as a cucumber while we measured her, removed the hook and relseased her. Her skin had this golden shimmer and she was smooth and strong to the touch (unlike the #tigersharks, which feel really slimy)!
.
@billyraysilas took this beautiful photo as she swam away. I’ll probably never see her again.

Although getting out of bed at 4am hurts, one of the gems of #fieldwork is that you’re on the water early. Then, you feel productive and allow yourself to pause for a moment to watch the sun rise. We’ve seen it rise out of the ocean and the ridge. I’m not sure why it’s so hard to get myself out of bed for sunrises on days I’m not in the field! Maybe it’s because I want more than six hours of sleep. Lol.

This little #shark and I have something in common. People always seem to underestimate our strength because of our size. #smallbutmighty
.
Any guesses on what species this is? Here’s a hint, he’s full grown!

She was not a very cooperative customer! This 3m lady tiger was ready to go. And this photo shows us about to release her. We work very quickly so the animals are under as little stress as possible. One part of that is to ensure that the two lines securing her head and tail are unclipped at exactly the same time for ease and safety of all humans and #sharks.
.
Photo by @billyraysilas. Follow him for great pics -he’s a shark researcher (works on great white sharks too!) in Western Australia and spends heaps of time around big waves and big animals! He takes pretty good photos too 😎.

RESEARCH: We left the harbor at 4:30am and set the first lines just before sunrise. We caught 10 sharks, but still no hammerheads. This #pigeye shark (also known as a #javashark) was a nice surprise since nearly all of our other #sharks were large, rolling, diving, uncooperative #tigersharks. I’ll post photos from one of the big girl tigers soon.

FIELD WORK: I’m in Western Australia for the next two weeks. The purpose of this trip is two-fold: 1. Deploy satellite tags on large #hammerhead sharks for @michelleheupel @spinnershark7 tagging project. 2. To see how these WA Fisheries guys (photo 2) catch and handle really big #sharks (>3m / 9ft). I want to ensure I feel comfortable with catching the big sharks from small boats. These boys are the best in the business and needless to say, there are some really big animals in these waters!
.
We’ve caught two #tigersharks (first photo - check out the stripes!) that were over 8ft long, a few sandbar sharks and the cutie pie juvenile #spottail shark (photo 3), which I couldn’t have identified if my life depended on it. Lol.
.
It’s already a good trip and it’s just begun.

EXCITING NEWS! Today, at the Our Ocean Conference in Malta, my friends and colleagues of the Pacific Island Nation of #Niue announced their intention to create a large-scale marine protected area in 40% of their country's waters, which is roughly 127,000 square km of their Ocean. The area encompasses Niue island itself and a submerged atoll called Beveridge Reef, where last year during an expedition with the Government of Niue, Tofia Niue, Oceans 5, SPC and @natgeopristineseas, we recorded the highest density of grey reef sharks in the world. It is an absolute jewel in Niue's waters that is teeming with abundant marine life. Now, it will be protected.
.
What's even more exciting is that the government decided to "lock up" some of their commercial fishing effort for conservation. This is a first in the world! They have chosen to put more of a focus on sustainable tourism.
.
So proud of the team. And now, we all need to get to @niueisland to show them that these bold actions mean something to us too!

Three years ago, I'd say we made the right decision by giving the whole "really long distance thing" a try between San Diego, CA and the Cook Islands! I can't believe my friends were supportive of that decision! Lol. Thank god we fought for it over many thousands of miles. This photo sums up exactly how we feel about our life now, pretty darn lucky to be living it together, adventurously, happily, and on our terms.
.
ps- oh, and thanks for leaving everything and everyone you love to move to a faraway place with me @kirbymorejohn . 😬.
.
pps- we need a jet ski.
