@stevestills here with the last Charreada shot. It’s a wild, sweaty, exhilarating, passionate sport that is steeped in history and tradition, yet is searching to find its way in modern Mexico. It’s full of incredible characters who are fiercely proud, humourous and full of life.

You can see and read a lot more about this fascinating culture in a story linked in my profile. I’m planning another trip out there in the next year. If you’d like to get on board, please drop me a line.

@stevestills taking you ringside at the Charreada. While the riders you saw in the last shot are corralling the wild horse to the outside of the ring, the charro who's speciality is working with the rope is performing tricks while at the same time judging the pace of the horse. He's judged for flair and rope skill but the ultimate test is roping the horse at speed. The way the horse is actually roped is essentially laying a snare by keeping the loop of the rope big and laying it down where they anticipate the front legs of the horse will land. Only if both of the front legs are roped do they then pull on the rope and tighten it around the front legs, which then 'trips' the horse with dramatic results

@stevestills saying 'vamanos!' here on my last day of taking over. This is one of the more dramatic events at the Charreada, the ‘Manganas a Caballo’. 3 riders on horseback corral a wild horse to the outside of the ring so their compadre can predict where to lay the rope that will snare the front legs. Seeing these guys control their horses at high speed and overlap each other in such a tight space is breathtaking.

So this is the last day of my takeover (@stevestills here) and I’m going to take you to Mexico and an ongoing project I’m shooting on Charreada and its place in Modern Mexican society. I’ve been there twice at the time of the “Congreso Nacional Charro” which happens every year and is a competition that attracts teams from all over Latin and North America.
