After 5 days trekking the grasslands of Kham, eastern Tibet, at altitudes of around (4450m/14,600ft), I am so thankful to Dorje, our 18yr old guide, who taught us so much about the nomadic way of life & helped us with every challenge faced. Also big s/o to the small dog who joined us on day 3. 🖤🌞🏔️ #kham #trek #tibet

Spent the afternoon in the Ganze Valley exploring a few local Tibetan monasteries. At this particular spot we were invited in to join the 4pm chanting session with the resident monks - which was a wonderful combination of gutteral recitals, reverberating horns and rhythmic drumming. Tomorrow we head to Yachen Gar, one of our favourite spots in eastern Tibet. #exploremore

More Tibetan scenes.
These lil dudes showed me round their monastery and wanted me to keep taking their picture.

More Yarchen Gar aesthetics

Had to share a ride with a bus full of monks and nuns to get here. Was told the police would stop me from getting in as a foreigner but they seemed pretty distracted by playing Xbox on their new fuck-off big plasma screen tv to hold me at the checkpoint. A sharp contrast to the monks who live in pretty dire conditions in a sprawling shantytown without any running water or proper insulation from the -15C late March temperatures.

Two monks leave their shacks to attend the morning prayers at Yarchen Gar. The Buddhist school and monastery is located 3,900 metres above sea level in the Tibetan Plateau and is home to an estimated 20,000 monks and nuns, becoming the second largest congregation of Buddhist disciples in the world. Resident numbers at Yarchen Gar started to soar in 2001, when the Chinese government first started demolishing the country's largest Buddhist complex, nearby Larung Gar. Fearing forced evictions, many monks and nuns took refuge in Yarchen Gar. Most of the residents live in makeshift homes with no running water and heating, despite the harsh weather conditions. #tibet #china #nikon
