“You recurred, you restrained, you cared, and you kept me alive” (2019) is a ceramic installation that responds to the museum’s prohibition to bring soil inside the gallery. Within an exhaustive material research on fire, containment and soil, the work reflects on the broader ideological foundations that constitute this artistic and educational institution with its infrastructures of care and control.

Congratulations to the 2019 University of Toronto Shelley Peterson Student Art Exhibition Award Winners: Sarah Pereux, Jiaqi Yuan and Thắng Vũ, who were announced last night during the opening reception.
Prize Juror Nahed Mansour had these comments about the Award recipients:

Sarah Pereux's detailed black and white drawings The Beaver (Sal) and The Canada Goose demonstrate high technical skills with beautifully balanced compositions. Pereux's grotesque re-imagination of two of Canada's most iconic animals successfully evokes histories of settler-colonial genocide and environmental destruction.

The found Chinese rattle drum in Jiaqi Yuan's Futuristic Toy evokes playful movement and cultural specificity. By undermining the familiar object with the cold machinery that controls it, Yuan provides an acute critique of our increasingly automated world.
Thắng Vũ’s triptych Who Cares documents his performance critiquing the economies upholding the art market. The work stands out in its ability to simultaneously contextualize the performance and showcase Vu's aesthetic and conceptual experimentation across mediums.

Prieto is an Argentine artist and educator based in Toronto, whose work explores intimate and socio-political entanglements of mundane objects and rituals, manifesting through sculpture, installation, performance, and writing. And last but not least in our 2019 @uoftdaniels MVS Studio Program Graduating Exhibition profiles is artist Sahar Te.
Te is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice mobilizes methods that open up alternative realities and confront convention. Exploring the role of past narrativization as it shapes the future, Te’s interventions range from language and semiotics, social dynamics and ethics, to media studies and oral histories. Te’s projects engage in socio-political and techno-political discourses to understand hegemony within different power structures.
Join us for the opening reception on April 17 and celebrate! ✨ The artists will be in attendance.

Next up in our 2019 @uoftdaniels MVS Studio Program Graduating Exhibition profiles is Miles Rufelds.
Rufelds is an artist and writer based in Toronto. Rufelds’ interdisciplinary work weaves historical research with fictional, speculative, or narrative structures. Often working backwards from contemporary political-economic anxieties, his projects probe the technocratic systems connecting industry, science, ecology, and aesthetics.
Join us for the Opening Reception on Wednesday, April 17!
