“How many calories can I log a 5k run as?”
It’s not a stupid question. It’s just a question with the wrong focus. Invariably the estimation will ALWAYS be wrong.
Yesterday I posted on my story how I decided to use 100cals on the air bike as a measure. While this can be a good measure for some high intensity exercises I was not adding that 100 cals to my daily calorie goal. That didn’t even cross my mind. Its a very different way of looking at it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For example to fat loss clients I rarely advocate for them to log their calories burned training for the following reasons:
•It’s usually disappointingly minimal in comparison to the calorie deficit created with nutrition.
•Therefore it detracts from the enjoyment of being able to exercise. Exercise is a privilege which is often overlooked.
•Cardio machines, fitbits, and the exercise calculator on myfitnesspal are notorious for being inaccurate.
•In terms of progress, just burning MORE calories week to week is not genuinely a good measure of progress. Not only for the above reason but because it’s dull as hell.
•It can encourage the “f*** it* mentality towards food of “I exercised so I deserve to reward myself with this food”. If you need to reward yourself then do it with something non food based.
•Equally it can encourage the guilt mentality of “burning off food”.
•While fat loss can be achieved from the calorie deficit created solely from exercise, the amount that is needed to do this is quiet large and therefore unsustainable long term.
•While endurance athletes and those in bodybuilding competitions may need to pay attention to calories burned, for us lot it’s not where we should be placing the emphasis when it comes to fat loss.
When in a fat loss phase look at exercise as:
•Something to energise you and boost your mood.
•Something to help aid the calorie deficit created by your nutrition first and foremost.
•Something to help you maintain muscle mass.
•Something progressive that you enjoy.
•& 100 other reasons individual to you however just to burn calories shouldn’t be one of them 👍🏼😊
