Photo @ladzinski / Bordering Bolivia and Chile, the volcano know as #Licancabur is a holy mountain to the people of the #Atacama. Standing tall at 19,400ft, this volcano is a picturesque icon of the desert hovering over the #atacamaSaltFlats. This mountain was at one time forbidden to climb by the locals, saying that it would bring misfortune and that the mountain would punish those who attempted it. Mixing it up here with an in-camera #doubleExposure of the volcano and atacama salt flats. To see more photos from this beautiful part of the world please visit @ladzinski

Photo @Hammond_Robin. South Sudanese 22 year old Anthony Tuesday has mental health problems that he says started when he had malaria as a child. He describes his current situation: “Am feeling well, am feeling well, very normal, no more sickness but before that, I was dizzy, I am getting headache, sometimes I used to take panadol, then if the other time I’m must be going to Juba teaching hospital to Dr. George then they will give me tablets by their own. When without feeling father or mother I can go to my uncle, and give me money, go to the hospital and take medication… Sometimes when am feeling headache too much, I can tell my father, “dad, am feeling headache” Then they will get medication to make me sleep.” #InMyWorld is designed to expose the challenges faced by people living with mental health issues and give them the chance to be seen, heard and valued. This first phase of the campaign was created in collaboration with @handicap_international as part of Witness Change's work on global mental health. @witness_change is a nonprofit that aims to end human rights violations for marginalized communities through visual storytelling. Photo by @noralorek for @natgeo. Steven Ladu is sitting in his new opened tiny shop close to his home in Bidibidi refugee settlement. Like many other kids the 13 year old is trying to make some money to help providing his family with basics like soap and clothes. His family from South Sudan has lived here in Uganda for almost a year and they're still hundreds of refugees crossing the border to Uganda each day
.
In August the one millionth refugee from South Sudan entered Uganda in escape of the war. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in July 2011 and became the worlds newest country. Now is home to over 60 different major ethnic groups and is one of the most diverse countries in Africa.

Every morning, researcher Connie Allen (@connieallen_photo) wakes up to a chorus of starlings and hornbills singing, lions roaring in the distance and on less fortunate days, monkeys climbing all over her tent. “I first moved to Makgadikgadi Pans National Park [in Botswana] two years ago, and quickly fell in love with the bush life,” says Connie. “I live permanently in the park with the team from Elephants for Africa, a NGO dedicated to improving the relationship between elephants and the communities here.” Her main focus of research is understanding the social behaviors of male African elephants. “Up until now the majority of social studies on elephant have been on females,” Connie explains. “Like many people, I have been fascinated by and drawn to elephants for as long as I can remember. As I grew up, and their future became increasingly threatened, I became more and more determined to make my contribution to improving our understanding of these magnificent creatures and help in their conservation.”
Spend a day with Connie and the elephants. It’s on our Instagram story right now.

A silverback mountain gorilla looks at me at the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. I look back at him and see the soul of humanity, its purest expression.
There are about 900 mountain gorillas left on earth, living in a mountain forest surrounded by a stone wall. At the other side of the wall there are a thousand people per square kilometer. An island of wild nature surrounded by a sea of humanity. The good news is that Rwanda has developed a phenomenal ecotourism program that keeps the gorillas safe, employs many local people, and brings in huge revenue to the country. It's the most successful example of conservation business. We need more of that around the world - and many more gorillas.

Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPfindthelight
Light, camera, action! This weekend, the goal is to take photos and videos that showcase light in beautiful and diverse ways, as in this featured photo from Nadia (@laporterouge). Here are some tips to get you started:
Light transforms ordinary scenes into extraordinary ones. Take a photo of the morning light as it pours into your kitchen, or during a sunset stroll.
Have an outdoor portrait session with a friend. Try going during the golden hour, or find a perfectly and naturally illuminated wall to use as your backdrop.
Play with time and light together by photographing the same subject in the morning, afternoon and evening. Use multi-post to show how the light changes the scene throughout the day.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPfindthelight hashtag only to photos and videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

Photograph by @paulnicklen // The thing I love most about my job is that I get to connect people to ecosystems that they probably will never get a chance to see. Some marine ecosystems are thriving and others are deeply threatened. Right now, we are photographing in British Columbia, looking at the biggest threat to this coast and and its wild populations. Please #followme on @paulnicklen to learn a lot more about these issues but I must warn you, the content is shocking. I put him up on the post to give him a good view,” says Gary’s human, small business owner Nicola Armster of @nicandthenewfie. “Gary is really just the happiest if he can sit in a spot and watch small animals run around.”

Photograph by @paulnicklen #IntelSponsorContent | As the ‪midnight sun‬ endlessly skips across the arctic horizon, a mother rests on a drifting pan of sea ice with her seven month old cubs. As sea ice diminishes and reaches its lowest extent in recorded history, the task ahead for all polar bears is a difficult one. Polar bears need sea ice in order to hunt for seals. I’ve been very fortunate to have spent most of my life out on the sea ice observing polar bears, both as a biologist and a photographer. Now, we must use the cross section of art, science, and conservation to truly drive change for this threatened species. Be sure to check out our Instagram Story today, “Above the Arctic: An @Intel Drone Expedition.”

Video by @BertieGregory. The dramatic landscape deep in the heart of the unexplored Chiribiquete National Park. This massive area boasts one of the largest protected areas of jaguar habitat in the world. It is also home to ancient paintings of jaguars, representing some of the earliest evidence of humans in South America. I shot this from a drone whilst accompanying a team from Fundacion Herencia, an incredible group of people doing real 21st century exploration. It’s very humbling to know that there are still places on this planet we know almost nothing about. But despite its remoteness, it is still under threat.
We owe a huge thanks to Parks Colombia and the Colombian Ministry of Culture for their support. Stay tuned for @stevewinterphoto ‘s upcoming jaguar story for @natgeo Magazine and our TV show for @natgeowild. Follow @bertiegregory for more wildlife adventures!

Harp Seal Pups Kissing! Two harp seal pups meet each other on the pack ice of Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence, touching noses as they sniff one another. Pups are generally born in this region during February, spending about two weeks nursing from their mothers before heading off into the frigid arctic waters on their own. The decline of sea ice over the last decade has created a serious crisis for these animals, as pup mortality rates have increased substantially. If the climate continues to warm and sea ice disappears, the future is uncertain for this species.

To see more ocean wildlife, and to learn more about my experiences photographing for National Geographic, follow me, @BrianSkerry, on Instagram.

photo by @chamiltonjames / Charlie Hamilton James - This week I have been working with a brave and dedicated group of fire fighters in the eastern Amazon. They protect the indigenous reserve of Arariboia, home to the Awã and the Guajaja people, from forest fires. Fire season here is just coming to an end as the first rains of the wet season arrive. This year has been a very busy time for the fire fighters who have tackled huge blazes in the territory. Armed with minimal equipment they have developed techniques and strategies to contain the fires but many get out of hand and burn huge areas of forest. The forest here is special; it is home to isolated Awã - tribes living in voluntary isolation from the outside world; often romantically described as ‘uncontacted’. The aim of the fire fighters is to protect their land and the land of the isolated people who’s rights they value enormously - even though they have never met them. The crews are made up of indigenous Guajaja and IBAMA fire fighters. This shot shows a manioc field on fire - many people in the area clear cut forest to grow manioc, they then burn the area to clear the dead wood before planting crops. This often gets out of control and burns the surrounding forest. Fortunately in this instance the fire was kept under control. On assignment for @natgeo in Brazil

Photo by @hammond_robin for @witness_change. “Since my daughter was born, she does not speak or walk… We can’t know what happened to her… Our biggest challenge is to get a good treatment so we could change her life," says Amidou of his 9 year-old daughter Dambouame, who lives with a mental health problem. "Seeing her like that really makes me pity. Girls of her age are not like that and it tears me to see her like that.” Amidou and Dambouame were photographed in the village of Sibor Toti in Northern Togo - one of the poorest regions in the west African country. Many mental health professionals point to poverty as a contributing factor towards the high number of people living with mental health problems.
