A major peak of the Garhwal Himalaya, Mt. Neelkanth stands at 6507m. It is a pyramidical-shaped peak that is popularly known as the 'Garhwal Queen'. This snow-clad mountain peak rising just above the Badrinath Temple is indeed one of the most stunning summits in the Garhwal Himalaya. The Satopanth Glacier is on the northwest side of Neelkanth, the Panpatia Glacier remains on the southwest side.
Neel meaning Blue and Kanth meaning throat, it is one of the many name of lord shiva, One of the most revered hindu deity. According to legends, there used to be no Neelkath mountain earlier. A route would connect the temples of Kedarnath and Badrinath. However, due to the sins committed by priest, Lord Shiva was displeased and erected a sky high mountain between the two temples.
